    That's gotta be either a walkie talkie, or a short wave radio.  It's definitely not a cell phone since there are no cell phone networks in 1928, the phone wouldn't be functional.

    Nope, publicity stunt.  The first thing the film guy tells you about is his two films that "you'll be hearing a lot about in the next couple of years," with accompanying graphics popping up on the screen. 
     
    Then there's the thing about no cell phone towers in 1928. 
     
    There's also the studs on the zebra's halter, glittering in color at the beginning of the clip - there was no color film in 1928.  I've seen someone try to say that those are just spots on the film - NOT when they coincide perfectly with the studs on the halter (or bridle, if you prefer - I have trouble telling the difference). 
     
    Also, the woman is walking in perfect synch with the man in front of her.  That just seemed weird, but it tells me that it was staged.  A stooped over old lady is going to walk in synch with a taller, younger man?  I don' t'ink so.
