An unnamed philosopher found himself in spirit form in The Neitherlands , a land for those who are neither dead or living. He soon discovered that cats have the ability to cross between different plains of existence, and that he could in turn posses a cat and travel inside its body. In the body of a grey cat, he became known as The Eminence Grise, and he spent countless years traveling across reality in this form.

Due in part to the interference of The Dead Boy Detectives, The Eminence Grise was split into two separate cats that each held part of the philosopher's consciousness; A white one with a black tail named Tim, and a black one with a white tail named Bing. The two cats are able to communicate with each other via telepathy, and now accompany the Dead Boy Detectives on their adventures.
