Thunderbolts #164 - Golden Age Thunderbolts

4

Time-lost villains and a paralyzing conundrum. What happens when the Thunderbolts are forced to sabotage Captain America? Solid writing and a good set-up, but not quite perfect.

The Good

I'm actually not minding the Thunderbolts' jaunt through time as much as I thought I would. Even thought this "b-team" was established during Fear Itself, it's grown on me tremendously. It'll be interesting to see where this divergent timeline goes, and how the Thunderbolts will get back alive.

Some of the art was very Hellboy-ish, and I enjoyed every minute of it. If there's anyone who knows how to draw Nazis, it's Mike Mignola. The artists really captured the atmosphere of a 1940's comic book; a little too optimistic to be true, but still creepy enough to inspire fear.

I really liked the paradox that the team faced in this issue; sure, the bad guy could die, but that'd mean the Thunderbolts might not get created! Amazing stuff.

The Bad

Not much, to be honest. This is a good issue, but I'm kind of sad that the book didn't continue on the roll that the "Juggernaut" issue started. Jeff Parker is a great writer, but this issue seems to be a bit of a set-up for the next.

The Verdict

Thunderbolts is one of the best books Marvel is putting out right now. Jeff Parker can make characters I didn't care about before seem really interesting with great inter-personal conflicts and great dialog.

Definitely looking forward to the end of this arc; however, it doesn't get a perfect grade because it didn't exactly blow me away.
