Its been bothering me since I saw the red hulk change back into Ross.
What happens to his mustache when he's the red hulk? He doesn't have one when he's the red hulk but when he changed back he has a mustache.
Does it retract into his face when he transform and comes back out when he changes back or something.
Thunderbolt Ross
Character » Thunderbolt Ross appears in 1614 issues.
Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross is former U.S. military general. He is father of Bruce Banner's love Betty Ross and was archenemy of the Incredible Hulk. Ross made a deal with villains to be transformed into a Hulk himself. As the ruthless and cunning Red Hulk, he attempted to destroy his nemesis and take control of the country before seeking redemption as an Avenger. After leaving the team, he formed his own group of Thunderbolts with other Anti-Heroes. He was recently depowered by Doctor Green.
His mustache
It's because Red Hulks is not cool and only cool people get to rock an awesome mustache. Hence the cosmic powers of awesome remove his mustache whenever he transforms.
The same thing has been bothering me too. I thought it was probably something having to do with gamma rays affecting facial hair, but then i looked back at the Old Man Logan issues and there are many hulks with facial hair. example:

It is not effected by the gamma rays, so he gets bigger but the hair stays the same size. By the time he gets Hulk size, you don't notice it because it is under his nose. Sort of like Hitler or Charlie Chaplin, which btw were also rumored to be Red Hulk.
Wait what? Ross is the Red Hulk? In Hulk vs X-force, Rulk is shown speaking to General Ross and Samson. What did I miss? :(
" Wait what? Ross is the Red Hulk? In Hulk vs X-force, Rulk is shown speaking to General Ross and Samson. What did I miss? :( "Yeah, cat is out of the bag. I think it was a life model decoy. Lame.
A semi related question, why does his hair turn black? When Hulk got old, didn't his hair turn gray?
Radiation makes it fall out and when he changes back it re-grows... no that's just silly, when he Hulks-out it camouflages itself
yeah but Banner's Hair turns from brown to Black or green." A semi related question, why does his hair turn black? When Hulk got old, didn't his hair turn gray?

In a Hulk comic from around 10 years ago, Banner has full-grown facial hair, like a goatee and a mustache, and when he turns into the hulk, he's clean-shaven.
I've seen in one of his comics, he was hidin in Alaska and he had a full grown beard and when he turned into the hulk, the Hulk had it too. I guess it just depends on the artist.
I know this thread is a year old, but I wanted to help you guys out. Short Answer: The hair is masquerading as the Red Hulk's upper lip. Think of Ross like a skrull with a moustache. You guys watch the series Mighty Avengers? In recent episodes, Iron Man was apprised of the skrull invasion. In complaining of his suspicions to the Avengers, he noted that Wasp and Hulk were "shape changers". It's interesting to note that they are two very different types of "shape changers". We know the Wasp and Giant Man change in size, but the general impression has always been that the Hulk grows and gets more muscular. But, we know that in practice... this isn't true. No gamma-irradiated character has ever simply gotten bigger. Their mutation has a deeply psychological component. Virtually every aspect of a gamma mutation is up for grabs. Some gets scales, some grow wings, some get giant heads, some have various colors, some get more sexually attractive. In Ross' case, his Hulk is specifically intended to look like the Hulk he hated so much... except Red. When Ross goes through his transformation, the facial hair (other than his eyebrows) simply mutates into his lip. It doesn't retract, or fall out, the hair mutates. All Hulks have hair that mutates in a variety of ways. Some mutations make the hair longer, other mutations make some hair, in different places, appear to vanish entirely... even if it is technically still there. Ross didn't simply want to be a bigger version of himself. He wanted to be a bolder, badder, more imposing version of the monster he has hated all his life. It's the mutation version of Cesar Romero powdering his moustache to be the Joker. In their minds, their alter egos don't have moustaches.

perfect
I still say that the retraction hair idea is bullcrap. He sheds his hair like a werewolf does when it reverts back into human form.
The best examples of this are in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and in Van Helsing.
Van Helsing transformation (aka Wolverine gets hairier)

Well....Hulk had a beard for a while. So...kind-of?
Ya but the novelty isnt there, like it would be with ross.
Well there is a pic of him in mid-morph sporting a gray mustache. Hulk 53. Can't find it though online to show you. :(
To put it simply: It's not just his mustache that disappears, it's his eyebrows too. His mustache doesn't retract, it's consumed. When he gains mass as he transforms into Red Hulk, that mass grows over his short hairs, such as his chest hair, back hair (ugh), eyebrows, and, of course, his mustache. Why this didn't effect Maestro's mustache is a possibility of three reasons: One, his beard was of such length that it couldn't be overgrown by the extra mass. Two, he hadn't turned into Banner in such a long time that the beard was fully Hulk grown, so no reason for it to be grown over. Or three: The unique combination of gamma and cosmic radiation that made Red Hulk caused a different reaction in said short hairs. This would also explain his black nails and hair.
