Thought Bubble Anthology #1

5

This collection of short stories is perfect for any avid comic enthusiast; and the price tag doesnt hurt, either.

The Good

The best thing about the first issue of THOUGHT BUBBLE ANTHOLOGY published by Image Comics is just how much you actually get for 2.99. In this issue you get fourteen well rounded and developed stories; each with an interesting central character and really beautiful art to accompany a brief, albeit powerful story. Most of the stories took up only one page of the issue, the longest of the stories published in this book was only four pages long. What really impressed me was just how much of the characters the creative teams were able to relay to the readers with only single page.

The book is very diverse. Some of the stories are inspired by fairy tales, others are humorous and some are of the horror genre. Each is very unique in its own way, and most were able to capture the identities of the central characters very eloquently in a way that will often leave the reader wanting more.

My favorite of the fourteen stories was "November North of England," written by writer Andy Diggle with art by D'Israeli.

The Bad

It's not clear where else we can see more from these creators. I would have liked to have been pointed to to more of their work.

The Verdict

This is a really fantastic way for independent creators to get published, and I will definitely be on the lookout for more of these Though Bubble Anthology books. I think that when a writer and an artist are able to come up with a short story that takes up only a single page and is able to give the reader a generally good idea about the central character (who he is, what he does, his conflict), thats a perfect example of great writing. I was definitely impressed with the range of stories (different genres) collected in this anthology, and felt it is absolutely worth the 2.99 price tag. This is the kind of book you can go back and read over and over again for fun. Beautiful book, great writing, highly recommended.
