I do not remember the issue, but during the JMS run, Thor entered the sleep while he had the Odinpower.  It would seem that the impressive abilities that come with that require a more extreme rejuvenation than ordinary sleep.

This was obviously part of Stan Lee's mission to have a slight handicap for every hero.  Ironman had the bad heart.  Thor could'nt lose possession of  Myolnir for sixty seconds.  Sub-Mariner lost power out of water.  Spiderman 's web cartridges would jam.  Sue Storm would pass out from over exertion.  The list goes on..........

In comics, the Odinforce is so powerful it requires periodic rejuvination when pressed too far or in Odin's case due to his age. One may argue the Asgardians are closer to mortality than some of the other pantheons so the higher levels of power tax Odin more.

Out of story, Odin is a walking plot device and the Odinsleep is a convenient way to remove him to have Asgard threatened. Several stories have had Thor or Asgard in jeopardy only for Odin to awake at the last moment and with a wave of his hand save the day. Having a caring, all-powerful being looking over Thor's shoulder every minute can make it difficult to seriously threaten Thor.

Hm... that was kinda interesting actually. A lot of these ''handicaps'', they dont really exist anymore do they? I wonder what the Lee says about that.

It's a throwback to when story writing was meant to be interesting and compelling and relatable. The more powerful the being, the worse their handicap/weakness. OP heroes (or villains) who are just OP aren't interesting. There's no real way to threaten them without coming up with a caveat which in turn just makes the fans disappointed to see "yet another instance" of their favourite character being depowered for plot (which btw is massively lazy uncreative and overall bad writing).

Stan was a master of his craft whereas a lot of writers these days are either agenda driven, lack any real creativity, are just plain hacks or see themselves as in some kind of pissing contest to see who can create the most overpowered Mary Sue.
