What is the Ragnarok cycle?

It has been mentioned an awful lot of times in Thor's stories but I never quite understood it

@Ghostodoofus: In Norse mythology Ragnarok is the end of the world, in which Thor and Jormungandr (midgard/world serpent) are destined to kill each other. Many other gods will die, also the earth is destroyed. Then the earth will renew itself with help from some of the surviving gods.

Although I believe in Marvel comics Thor managed to break the cycle.
