Powers

Odin, the Skyfather of Asgard, said to the Earth Goddess Jord, also known as Gaea the Earthmother of Midgard, "I seek an heir whose powers surpass Asgard." Besides being the strongest man in creation, and durable enough to withstand a blast from Celestials, Thor also has energy manipulation powers that are on par with the Silver Surfer, and magical abilities that have been shown, on occasion, to be as powerful as those of Dr. Strange himself. He is also armed with Mjolnir, the mystical warhammer that has been shown to be capable of opening passageways through space and time, blocking all sorts of energy blasts, and bending the elements to its master’s will. Thor has been shown to be able to swing Mjolnir at twice the speed of light (and this was never claimed to the fastest that Thor could swing it either). Thor is an Asgardian warrior god, trained and skilled in the arts of battle, and he’s been doing it for countless ages. While Thor has usually been shown to rely solely on his fighting ability, super strength, and well nigh invulnerability, he has so many other options available to him if a fight starts going badly. He has complete mastery over the weather, he can open chasms in the earth, he can even drain the soul out of his opponent’s body, or if worst comes to worst, use the dreaded God-blast, an attack that is so powerful that one time Mjolnir shatered from the amount of power Thor channeled. Thor has even broken through the armor of the Celestial Exitar in one blow; the force of it created a shock wave which rocked the planet Pangoria to its foundations, and was about to destroy it entirely if Thor hadn't acted. While on Earth, Thor greatly withholds his power unless fighting someone with similar strength and durability.

Asgardian/Elder God Hybrid Physiology: Biologically half-Asgardian, half-Elder God, Thor possesses a number of superhuman attributes common among the Asgardian and other gods. However, due to his unique birth, some are considerably more developed than those of the vast majority of his race. Thor's skin, muscle, and bone tissues have several times the density of the same tissues in the body of a human being, contributing to his superhuman weight. He is invulnerable to powerful energy blasts, weighted impacts, falls from great heights, explosions and various other opposing forces. Even without his godly power Thor is still physically the strongest and most durable of all the Asgardians.

Life-Force: also known as the God-Force. The godly energies that fuel all of Thor's godlike powers. Thor's immortal life-force is more powerful than the mystical properties of Mjolnir. Thor's Life-force is so strong that the Destroyer using all of it's powers could not destroy it. His Life-force allows him to be the most powerful being on the planet and one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Unlike many other dieties, Thor's unique Life-force allows him to have full access to all of his powers regardless of what realm he enters. The only being so far that has been shown to affect Thor's God-force is Odin or Odin's raven in the form of Marnot. Thor's God-force is also the key to him using the God-blast

There is no better proof than wiki entries! What deluded fanboy could possibly contest these claims?

@CitizenBane: agreed. ..I could care less who is stronger but I hate the disrespect on Thor .....Superman has all reason to loose this fight ...I could argue that Thor is Stronger than superman. I think this feat is looked down on ...the odinsword feat. Odin is the god of wisdom yet he couldn't calculate the weight of the sword ..then Thor hurls through a celestial ..thier armor is supposedly unbreakable ....the swords weight was incalculable and thor wasn't even straining that much ....then when it comes to powers. Thor has soooo many powers at his disposal that even the supernan that had super ventriloquism can't touch when it comes to how many powers

Thor does get to much disrespect concerning "Thor vs Superman" Debates. Its not really fair. A lot of people really don't know much about Thor. Thor has a move called God Blast... A move that would destroy superman. And a host of other magical powers, most of which rivals or surpasses even Dr. Strange. On paper, Thor gives superman a total beat down. But in comics, Thor will never beat superman because superman is simply more popular. Also large amounts of PIS seems to be injected in superman's favor

What is it with Thor and this "Thor should destroy everyone and if he doesnt its because he was holding back/PIS/Marvel hates Thor". I'm sure Thor does get an unfair time of it on the forums here relative to Superman (much like most Thor fans here don't seem to give Hulk any credit) but what makes you think he should "give Superman a total beat down"?

@TrueMarvel: The main debate in Superman v Thor is Thor is too slow and won't get a chance to use any of magical abilities

@Fifthchild:

  • Mystical Link: Mjolnir obeys Thor’s commands as though it were alive, and if Thor’s will is strong enough, the hammer can pass through nearly any barrier to reach him should he so chooses; Mjolnir will even carve its way through the very center of entire planets to get back to Thor. Mjolnir will even return to Thor while he is in his mortal persona as Jake Olson. Mjolnir can also transform Thor into his civilian guises. When Thor is a civilian, the hammer most often becomes an old wooden cane. While employing a mortal guise, Thor would transform back into his mortal form if he was separated from Mjolnir for more than 60 seconds. The 60 second enchantment is no longer in effect.
  • Weather Control: Wielding Mjonir grants Thor the ability to control the base elements of a storm, i.e. rain, wind, thunder, lightning and more. He can create giant raging electrical storms complete with thunder, lightning, hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, blizzards, tidal waves, exploding volcanoes, earthquakes and torrential rains across entire planets at a moment's notice. He can also create any of these phenomena individually. Another aspect of this power allows him to stop any of these weather conditions instantly as well. Thor can create storms on a planetary wide scale or larger if needed, and is not limited to the normal limits of Mother Nature and can go beyond and defy what natural weather can do such as creating rain in space where there is no atmosphere. Thor's ability to control and create storms extends to any and all storms as he has been shown to control and create raging temporal storms in time, create Solar Flares, powerful stellar winds in space and so on.
  • Energy Projection: With Mjolnir, Thor can project powerful mystical blasts of energy. He can even channel energies for stronger energy attacks.
  • Barriers: With Mjolnir, Thor is capable of creating powerful barriers, force fields and vortexes that are impenetrable. Not even Earth's most advanced weapons could weaken Thor's barrier field that shieled the U.N. headquarters. Thor stated that he could have contained a cosmic flash attack from Stellaris, this blast was strong enough to destroy the planet Earth. These vortexes and barriers are so immensely durable that Thor was able to completely contain the explosion generated by a life bomb, which is so powerful it would have completely destroyed a fifth of the Marvel Universe, without the vortex even faltering, meaning that Thor literally contained a blast that is capable of annihilating millions upon millions of Galaxies.
  • Energy Sensing: Mjolnir can detect practically all types of energy. It reacts particularly strongly to evil psychic energy, and supernatual energy.. Mjolnir can also track down the energy patern of someone in hiding, detect any Asgardians aura by their electrons discharge, and can sense and track the energy radiating from mystical objects.
  • Energy Absorption and Redirection: Thor is able to use Mjolnir to absorb any energy blasts directed towards him as means of attack. Once the energy is absorbed, Thor can redirect it back amplified many times over towards the source and/or use it as a weapon of his own. Thor has used Mjolnir to reflect the vast and hazardous amounts of energy being emitted by the biological weapon implanted within the Wasp's body by the Skrulls back at her while all of Earth's other super humans were helpless. Thor used Mjolnir to absorb Ultron's entire energy source, the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic,Sky-Walker's Cosmic Tempest, radio active energy, magnetism such as Magneto's personal magnetic field and a portion of the Pangoria's planetary magnetic field. Mjolnir's ability to absorb energy is so powerful he managed to absorb, contain and redirect the entire energy of the Null Bomb, which was powerful enough to destroy the entire galaxy, absorb mystical energies, such as Pluto's mystic flame. He was even able to absorb a portion of the mystical energies from every god patheon on Earth, and absorbed the electromagnetic energies of the Celestial Mother-ship.
  • Teleportation: By grasping Mjolnir by the leather thong and rapidly swirling it, Thor can channel energies for the purpose of opening gateways through means of a vortex and in this vortex time has no meaning, which means he and others can pass through it to their destinations instantaneously. He can open gateways which allow him to travel across locations no matter how great the distance within moments or even across entire dimensions, as he does when he travels from Asgard to Earth and vice-versa. Thor has used Mjolnir to rip the fabric of the Universe to send Surtur and Yimir to the Death Dimension and send an entire population to Limbo, Thor can also use Mjolnir to travel through portals anywhere within the same dimension.
  • Matter Manipulation: By spinning Mjolnir in a precise manner at cyclotronic speeds, Thor can manipulate matter from a molecular level to a vast scale, which allows him to create other configurations and even allows him to transmute the elements themselves. This ability was evident when he transmuted the Absorbing Man's wood and iron body to the gas helium.
  • Resurrection: While channeling his power through Mjolnir, Thor was able to resurrect a man he had wrongly killed.
  • Alpha Particles: Thor's hammer can harness Alpha Particles from the atmosphere and could use it to atomize any weaponry.
  • Negation of Mystic Energy: He used this ability on the Juggernaut himself to negate the mystical energies that grant him his mystical invulnerability, allowing him to defeat Juggernaut in combat. He was able to stop Mephisto from taking human souls to the Dark Dimension.
  • Nether World Power: Thor can use Mjolnir to tap into the power of the Nether Worlds (dark dimensions).
  • Cosmic Energy: Mjolnir allows Thor to produce and control Cosmic Energy to an unknown limit for a variety of purposes.
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum Manipulation: Thor was able to absorb and manipulate the electromagentic energies of the Celestial Mothership.
  • Invisibility and Intangibility: Thor can turn himself or others, using Mjolnir, completely intangible and/or invisible. An offshoot of this ability is that Thor can use Mjolnir to completely disrupt the phasing abilities of super humans such as the Vision, Shadowcat etc.
  • Transmigration of Souls: Thor's hammer has the ability to manipulate souls.
  • Life Force Absorption: Thor used this ability on the supervillain the Presence, who was forced to surrender before being reduced to a lifeless husk.
  • Undead Lethality: As a former religious relic, Mjolnir is lethal to undead. Thor once threw Mjolnir at a vampire, with contact causing the vampire to burst into flame and crumble to dust.
  • Immunity to Other Forces: Even without activating the powers of Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, enchanted by Odin, is impervious to nearly all forms of change, as he himself claimed that no power in the universe but the All-Father's could affect Mjolnir, shown when Amora's magical efforts during her first confrontation with Thor to change it into a deadly serpent availed her naught.

Basically all of these abilities. Strength and Speed have little to do with why I think Thor would win

I’ve heard it said that Superman is a hard character to write for, since he’s so powerful and finding a good foe or challenge for him can be something of a task. I say, “Bull!” Writing for Superman is EXTREMELY easy! You can tell how easy it is if you read some of his graphic novels or watch some of his movies, because they all tend to do at least ONE of the following five things–usually more.

1. Make a lot of allusions to Superman being like Jesus. Because, you know, Superman and Jesus are totally alike. Personally, my favorite parts of the Bible are when Jesus busts through the walls of the Hebrew temple, melts the swords of the Romans with his heat vision, and freezes the Sea of Galilee with his ice breath right before walking out on it. Therefore, be sure to toss in all kinds of allusions to how Kal-El is like the Son of God. It makes perfect sense. Last of an extinct alien race raised on Earth by adoptive parents to grow up and become an indestructible man flying around in his pajamas vs. one-third of a triune, creator deity, born of a virgin, sent to die for the salvation of mankind. To-may-to, to-mah-to.

Perfect!

2. Give Superman some kind of power, skill, or ability on a deistic level. It’s a common misconception that Superman is too powerful. He’s actually not powerful enough. Being bulletproof, the ability to fly, vision powers, breath powers, super speed, super strength–all child’s play. When you’re writing your story, feel free to make some new power up. Anything. Actually, the bigger the better. We’ve seen new powers as small as erasing memories with a kiss, to as large as creating alternate universes inside the Fortress of Solitude. Feel free to go beyond that, even (though it is tough to think about going much bigger than creating LIFE). The beauty of understanding this about Superman is that he’s a walking deus ex machina. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to write yourself into any corner with this guy.

. . . and fanboys everywhere will call your schlock "brilliant."

3. Destroy the Fortress of Solitude. Oh yeah, it’s got to go. First, don’t ask yourself if it’s been destroyed before–not important. Just blow the damn thing up. Have someone trash it. Have a meteor smash it. Have a ball! What’s a Fortress of Solitude if Superman is alone there all the time and no one knows about it? Make it common knowledge, and then have them DESTROY IT. Couldn’t be simpler. And be sure to get to it quick, too. Don’t waste your precious story time establishing it as a true place of refuge for the Man of Steel. Just assume everyone already knows about it, have the bad guy show up, and BOOM goes the fortress. Observe below:

plus

equals

Now you win!!

4. Have some Kryptonians show up. It’s really very logical when you think about it. Part of Superman’s character is there’s a deep lonliness in him because his entire race, his entire planet, no longer exists. He’s the last Kryptonian. So what better twist than to have some stray Kryptonians show up? I mean, if General Zod was such a huge hit, then MORE Kryptonians equals Superman story gold! Yet we can’t have EVERYONE come out of the Phantom Zone. Just say they were wandering the galaxy somehow or somewhere. Without a spaceship. Oh, sure, there’s the fact that Superman gets his power because of the light from our yellow sun, so Kryptonians wandering around in space away from yellow stars doesn’t actually make any sense–but so what? Just write it.

Pictured: The Opposite of Extinct

5. Do not, under any circumstances, bother with the difference between “dark and brooding” and “confident and serious.” No one likes a hero who has it all together, right? I mean, since the mid-1970′s, all of our heroes in comic books and action movies have been nothing but good-hearted, charming, stand-up citizens. . . . BORing. We need heroes that are conflicted and moody and lonely and disturbed and, oh what’s that word the kids are using these days . . . “emo.” The point of all of this is to help you understand how writing for Superman is easy, so trying to figure out the right balance between smiling altruist and “humanity” is out of the question. That’s too hard. That would require paying attention to his motivations to justify non-happy emotions, like anger. Instead, just make him dark and angry all the time, OR make him really sad and whiny. Your choice!

This makes Supes in no way like any other superhero!

Now you know how to write the perfect Superman story! Mix and match these five tips and you are guaranteed a winner! Happy writing!
