They've even got crows perched on the throne. That's attention to detail.

Now, this is a set.   No green screens, no motion sensors, no forced perspective… this golden throne room was actually built. What you’re looking at here is the latest THOR publicity photo that’s been making the rounds on the ‘net. The thunder god’s kneeling before Odin and some assembled Aesir in the All-Father’s chambers, presumably right before he gets banished to Earth from Asgard as punishment for his arrogance. From right to left, you’ve got Thor’s friend and family, including… Loki (Thor’s evil half-brother,) Frigga (Thor’s Mom,) Odin (Thor’s pops,) Hogun (Thor’s buddy, 1/3 of the Warriors Three) and Fandral (another third of the Warrior’s Three.)

While I’m positive that there’ll be no shortage of that famous imp, CGI, in THOR, I’m glad to see that there’s going to be at least some practical set design to balance it all out. If any of you Comic Vine maniacs have seen Kenneth Branagh’s staging of HAMLET, you’ll be well aware that the man knows how to frame an elaborate set piece like this.

I'm still a little skeptical about that gold eyepatch.

I hadn’t realized until seeing this that Hogun’s played by Japanese actor, Tadabanou Asano. I’m sure Marvel must’ve been impressed with his turn as Genghis Khan in MONGOL. With Idris Elba joining him as Heimdall, it’ll be interesting to see a Viking pantheon with a bit more diversity.

The other notable detail in this picture (and you really have to squint to look at it) is that Loki will, indeed  have horns on his helmet.  There was small controversy about the trickster lacking his… points in the last publicity photo which made the rounds this past week (peep it to the right.)   I imagine he’ll only be wearing that helm in battle and for ceremonies like this, because… well, it’d be awkward for Tom Hiddleston to wear all the time. He’d have to duck every time he walked through a door frame!

To be honest.... of what I've seen so far, it's the only thing that looks good.  Surprisingly  SciFi-ish.

#6 Posted by Realfruitjuice (20 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm still very sceptical.

#7 Posted by Duo_forbidden (1160 posts) - - Show Bio

I got to see a trailer before I give my full opinion about this movie. I'm not really a Thor fan.

Looking good, Marvel. Looking good.

#10 Posted by gregalodon (8 posts) - - Show Bio

I kinda dig these costumes! I wasn't all that interested in a Thor movie until Kenneth Branagh got involved, then I couldn't wait... until they announced the 3d conversion (for Capt. America too) now I'm not so sure again....

#11 Posted by Dek7264 (51 posts) - - Show Bio

That's some nice set design. As someone who's not a fan of Thor, I find myself getting more excited with each released photo.

It IS nice that this throne room isn't CGI.  I am with you, I like a mix of "hard" FX, real backgrounds, actors, and CGI FX, etc.   I hope the Thor movie does well but I am still a bit edgy about it.

Regarding Kenneth Branagh, if anyone has seen the mish-mash movie "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" ( I think that was the title) starring Robert DeNiro, then you may agree Branagh was probably the best thing about that movie.  A good movie but DeNiro as Frankenstein's creature...weird.

I digress but just thought I'd mention it I enjoyed Branagh's turn as Dr. Frankenstein.

It looks like  Flash Gordon the movie (from the 80's) instead of Thor.
Where's Ming????

Wow i love it.
I trust Kenneth Branaugh at the helm. the man is a genius infront and behind the camera.
im so glad they didnt 'ground this in reality' like so many other adaptations.  and are creating a world you can walk around in. sorry mr. Lucas, Set designers and builders are not out of work yet!

Thor has always been grandeuse and this film looks it.  it has that 1980 Flash Gordon vibe to it. Over the top but so cool , what a fantasy movie should be.
Now if they could add a Queen-inspired soundtrack to it (anyone got Scissor sisters number?) lol

#21 Posted by Kid_Zombie (824 posts) - - Show Bio

LOVE IT! Ive been staring at this pic for a day now and i cant help but love it. Everything that comes out about this movie is just getting better and better. Love that the crows are there! and volstaggs and sifs legs ha ha.

A lot of people are skeptical about this movie but to me sometimes it seems they just want the movie to fail. But I for one am very very excited. That set looks amazing.

#22 Posted by Thunderscream (1809 posts) - - Show Bio

why couldn't they have armor that actually looks Norse?

#23 Posted by Icemizer (181 posts) - - Show Bio

Nice that the Ravens are up on the throne, but this set looks very empty. Maybe it will be filled in by some CGI Asgardian warriors. As stated above very Flash Gordon like so far and I liked that film....20 years ago. Now get me a picture of the Rainbow bridge or suffer the wrath of a son Midgard.
#24 Posted by GraphicCasualFreak (221 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm SOOO worried this is going to look a Lord of the Rings knock off.

#25 Posted by ComixZone (11 posts) - - Show Bio

the gold eye-patch definitely does not work...

#26 Posted by sora_thekey (8150 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm thinking Loki might not be wearing the horns through out the whole movie, it must be heavy to carry it on your head...

I love the set it's beautiful!
This movie, no doubt will blow our minds!

@gregalodon: Just see it in 2D, the way it was intended when it was shot. Most converted movies are crap anyways.

With a Japanese actor and an African-American playing Asgardians, it looks like Marvel is trying its damnest to make Asgard a believable place, as diverse culturally as Earth (or Midgard, as they call it). Can't wait to see how many references to actual Norse mythology and Marvel's are in the movie (the ravens and Gugnir the Spear of Heaven are a good start, but how about Odin's 8-legged horse, Sleipnir?)

The thing is, though, the only shots of Asgard we have are inside the royal palace; no forests, no lakes, no frozen tundra, nor any volcanoes. On top of that, the only places on Earth we see in the movie so far are the New Mexico desert and a military lab, which is presumably also in the desert.

@Red Rum:  Hogun looks Asian in the comics, the Current Heimidall  doesn't look caucasian
#30 Posted by goldenkey (2927 posts) - - Show Bio

I still think Loki looks like an asshole.  so stupid.

#31 Posted by Rosebunse (151 posts) - - Show Bio

It's beautiful, just downright beautiful. Gold eye patch? Not so much, but that hall room is stunning.

Am I the only one who is eagerly awaiting the first images of Ray Stevenson as Volstagg?

#33 Posted by Comiclove5 (1255 posts) - - Show Bio

I truely can't wait to see this.
#34 Posted by Emperor Gonzo Noir (19714 posts) - - Show Bio

Feels promising, but only the trailer will tell

#35 Posted by Scholes60 (94 posts) - - Show Bio

The Throne looks impressive while the Palace has a serile look to it. It does not seem very Norse but rather an attempt to u"modernise" Odin's Palace.
Sir Anthony Hopkins is looking like an "All Father.

i am really becoming scared for this movie

#39 Posted by ArtisticNeedham (2223 posts) - - Show Bio

YAY! for Helmets!  Wish they would post Thors helmet, but thats cool.  Loki's helmet, Odin's helmet, look awesome so far!

#40 Posted by Silver Knight75 (1145 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm worried about this film due to rumors that it is on the borderline of science fiction and not the  classic mythological version.

#41 Posted by Silver Knight75 (1145 posts) - - Show Bio

Awesome, they have Odin's  birds on the throne.

raven's right?

#42 Posted by G'bandit (13689 posts) - - Show Bio

I have to say every pic i have seen of this movie looks great and is getting me very excited for it to come out. I know some people will probably be a little off by the brightness and flashyness of the set so far and golden eye patch and armor and such but i think it fits marvels interpetation of these characters. I just want to see Thors helmet, i may be out of the loop but has anyone heard is the helmet even in the movie?
#44 Posted by ComicCrazy (1537 posts) - - Show Bio

All the characters look pretty good but the asgard realm lanscape and buildings look pretty crap well of what I have seen anyway.
#45 Posted by PsychoPanda (164 posts) - - Show Bio

Odin shouldn't smile. Gold eyepatch isn't working. Even worse yet is that armor?! Totally impractical, which would be okay...but it looks like they tried to modernize his armor to match something that would go with X-Men 3?! Once again, Odin is dour, grim, brooding, .. most of the Norse gods are because they know the END of the world is coming. I think the only one known to be light hearted and smiling is Baldur.

#46 Posted by CadeShanley (85 posts) - - Show Bio

I can't wait to see this movie and I will be sticking around after the credits. And the scene shots are awesome dude!

#47 Posted by leokearon (1751 posts) - - Show Bio

Random thing, apparently there was some controversy because Heimdall was going to be played by a black actor, unlike in the comics where he's white.
