Is Thor a Planet Buster?

#1 Posted by warlockcaster (49 posts) - - Show Bio

I've generally got the impression that Thor can shatter planets either by projecting energy from or physically striking a planet with his hammer. However I have also heard his powers are not vast enough to allow him to do this. So I ask you, my fellow Comic Vine nerds, to give me your opinions. What is the true potential of the God of Thunder?

#2 Posted by MutenRoshi (851 posts) - - Show Bio

yes and no

it is generally accepted that Thor can bust planets even though he never has a planet showing on panel, that's because he's Earth bound s tends to hold back and he has a mental character flaw which means he often fights stupidly against bricks

...however Thor's weapon is a skyfather weapon and when Thor goes all out he can hurt Skyfathers, damage a Celestial, give pain to Galactus etc

most Thor level characters have displayed planet busting feats

Stardust, Classic Drax, Champion, the Silver Surfer, Gladiator, Beta Ray Bill, Morg etc all have displayed planet busting feats

He has potential to be but I don't think its proven

#4 Posted by DawnToDarkness (51 posts) - - Show Bio

i agree. even with that evil thor clone weve never seen how far he can go in terms of destruction.. im gunna vote yes tho

#5 Posted by joshmightbe (24463 posts) - - Show Bio

If he had full use of Odin Force he'd be a galaxy buster

#6 Posted by Z3RO180 (6250 posts) - - Show Bio

with out the odin force and at his full potenciel...yes

#7 Posted by EdBlank (492 posts) - - Show Bio

Eventually I am gonna get tired of calling this kinda thing stupid... but the idea of him hitting a planet with his hammer and destroying it just sounds silly

#8 Posted by Thor's hammmer (7184 posts) - - Show Bio

He breaks the Plenet/Planetoid/celestial body He fights Bill on in Blood and Thunder. Bill gets his powers to mimic Thor and He shatters a planet in his fight with stardust. and he's been directly stated to be able to do it many times.

@EdBlank: I suppose if you think about it in terms of physics the idea seems ridiculous. But Thor is a very powerful Asgardian God and a comic book character. Physics bends for him on a routine basis. That's why I love comics. Anything is possible. On a side note are you a Thor fan or do you prefer more realistic characters?

If Binary is a planet buster..then obviously Thor is as well.

What are her power levels compared to Thor's and has she destroyed a planet before?

yes

Yes.
#14 Posted by warlockcaster (49 posts) - - Show Bio

What are her power levels compared to Thor's? Is she more, less, or equal to him in power?

#15 Posted by SC (12508 posts) - - Show Bio

Its likely that any character that has the durability to wander about casually within the sun and travel hyperspace going faster than light/at the speed of light can bust a planet. Of course given that planets sizes have a huge size, durability disparity between them... so yah, its not really a Thor question, but a durability and speed question. (to me anyway) and so Thor has deus ex machina durability and speed, short answer to question is sure.

most likely,but not proven yet.

Thor would totally not be able to destroy Mogo

.... Thor has busted Ego before... so I'd say he is a planet buster... not just a planet buster, but a sentient planet buster... I could see him destroying many sentient planets...

@SC: That is quite impossible, and even if a sentient planet impossible on one with a green power ring

I'm going to say Thor has the power to shatter earth or planets of similar size and durability. He has absorbed energies that were stated to be capable of destroying planets with his hammer. Its safe to say he could draw forth enough magical energy with Mjolnir to lay waste to worlds. Thor simply exercises restraint so as not to harm innocents. Thanks for all your comments.

#22 Posted by ThanoStomp (779 posts) - - Show Bio

Thor has shown his ability to manipulate earth, a power he gets from his mother, Gaea. IMO if he can create a massive ravine withe a hammer strike then he could bust a planet with the combined use of his Thunder God and Earth(Gaea) powers.

#23 Posted by venomoushatred1001 (12334 posts) - - Show Bio

Yes.

#24 Posted by PowerHerc (80692 posts) - - Show Bio

Using the full extent of his powers, I'd say: Yes, he is.

This is Thor fighting Exitar the Exterminator (the Celestials bag-man). In this battle the shockwaves generated from Thor's initial blow (using only strength and hammer) are enough to lay waste to cities and mountains across the planet.

Imagine what the damage would've been had he actually struck the planet itself with the same blow. Now imagine he also used his elemental powers to strike the same spot simultaneously. If Thor had actually struck the planet with strength of arm and force of hammer while also using the power of lightning and wind; the impact force of such a blow coupled with the shockwave generated would surely be enough to bust a planet.

Yep.

I agree he could crush planets but im not a CV Nerd im a CV Outcast theres a difference...somewhere...

"Thor is physically the strongest of the Norse gods and one of the most powerful beings in the Universe. His feats include easily lifting a million tons, crumbling uru metal(what his hammer is comprised of) into dust with his bare hands, shattering the force field of the Silver Surfer with a single strike, knocking out Namor while in the rain, bringing the Juggernaut to his knees with two blows, beating Hercules in a arm wrestling match, stalemating Savage Hulk's strength for an entire hour(even though Hulk was getting stronger and stronger and still unable to overpower Thor) defeating the Gladiator in 60 seconds with nothing but his fists, lifting the Midgard Serpent, who was so large it could coil itself around Earth several times over and crush it in within its grip, overpowering cosmic entities when pressed in battle and phyically destroying stars and planets with his own strength alone. Thor is also capable of entering into a state of Berserker Rage known as Warrior's Madness, which will temporarily increase his strength tenfold but will only do so in desperate situations because it threatens his sanity."

Why did you bump this?

Yes

#31 Posted by Malevolent1 (1072 posts) - - Show Bio

It' tough to say. One has to wonder: if the blow Thor delivered above to the celestial had've been directly delivered to earth, what would've happened?

I have heard Gladiator has "planet busting" feats, but I have yet to see them. And I have never seens any "planet busting" feats by Thor.

Can someone prove me otherwise?

When since was Binary a planet buster?

#33 Edited by majestic99 (8638 posts) - - Show Bio

@jeanroygrant: @TheGoldenOne: @SC: @RazzaTazz: @Aqua11500: @warlockcaster: @unopen7639:

Here, Thor destroys another of Silver Surfer's force-fields with a single strike, from Silver Surfer #4:

Indeed, his punch is so powerful that combined with a punch of equal strength, it is capable of actually closing dimensional rifts, from Avengers #100:

Thor resists the gravimetric pull akin to "that of a neutron star" and busts out, from Thor #281:

Thor actually lifts the Midgard Serpent away from the Earth. Note that the catastrophic effects of such a feat are actually physically felt on Earth, from Thor #327:

So YES. Thor easily has the ability to bust a planet.

And as to physics, the Source(which exists at the center of every universe) gives

people superpowers that defy physics(meaning matter can be created/destroyed, hydrogen can turn into iron, etc.) the laws of physics can be broken.

IIRC When he is fighting beta ray bill, he comes down on bill without holding back and destroys the planet they are on.

I know what you're talking about, I believe when Thor when he insane he struck Beta Ray Bill with force that he ended up shattering the planet they were fighting on(although Beta Ray Bill wasn't knocked out).

It would depend on the planet, but I would surmise that he could kill or destroy a planet

Thor bust's a planet fighting bill. Bill busts a planet fighting stardust. he has multiple planet busting statements and narrations. and he has overpowered planet busters and even star busters. some of who even had been amped since.

In Thor vs Gorr series he was shattering planets around him only as a side effect of his hits including a pour populated moon was cracking in half. That is proof enough that only by his muscles and hammer he can destroy planets, it may not be with one hit to bust a planet with the size of the earth but sooner or later the planet will break.

Thor can also charge his hammer with cosmic storms, star's energy to amp the hits even more.

GB the planet. Full capacity anti-matter blast. thermal blasts(full capacity). Winds from 1000 worlds. Hit the planet at light-speed(more than one time maybe).

The easiest way of course would be entering in the core of the planet and mess him up with energy projection.

Easily. As probably could Juggernaut, Hulk, Nova, Silver Surfer and a lot of powerhouses. I think usually in confrontations in earth they should be able to focus their strength on their targets limiting the damage around.

Exactly. I've said this before but it takes a while for people to catch on sometimes.

@goldenguardian: Juggernaut and regular hulk???? don't think so...Thor can do it because of his hammer.
