Well, marvelnow! seems to think it's a mantle but yeah, it's his birthname. The inscription on Mjolnir reads "...shall have the power of Thor," not BECOME Thor. Just shows how much the current marvel regime either doesn't know or doesn't care about these characters.

@redwingx: Thor's real name is Thor. The fact that some girl is now being called Thor is absolutely insane and very stupid. Its not a title at all, its the name of a God. You can't just be Thor, only Thor can. Like the guy above me said, you're not supposed to become Thor when you're worthy, that's just dumb

Thor isn't a mantel it's his real name and you can't just pass his name to a female and say it's a mantel. Anyone else who has been worthy of Mjolnir hasn't been given the name Thor because Thor isn't s mantel

Thunderstrike kind of proved it is. Not to mention Odin was about to start calling Beta Ray Bill Thor when he had the hammer. Then there is the whole what if? story where Thor died fighting the midgard serpent an black widow picks up the hammer becoming the new thor.

In other fantasy books its also been represented as a transformation/mantled connected to the hammer.

That being said Thor will always be Thor Odinson, just not necessarily the Thunderer.

I agree Thor was born Thor long before the Mjolnir was made. Odin made Mjolnir for Thor and gave her to him and said you have come of age this is yours. Not here billy you can know be called Thor.....look at this nice hammer we have for you to play with. Sorry bad idea. Thor was always his name not his title.
