Mjolnir is often called the most powerful weapon in the nine worlds. Some people say that without it Thor is at best Hercules. The story that introduced Red Norvell Sif stated Thor is half of Asgard's military might and Mjolnir is have of his might. Still, others say that all of the powers lie within Thor including his weather and interdimensional powers. The former has been displayed more and more in recent stories and we have seen gods in the past open interdimensional portals with no aid and only their own power. In theory, Thor can fly on winds like Storm. The description on the hammer itself says "The power of Thor" and not "The Power of Mjolnir."

So, how much of the power is Thor's and how much is Mjonlir? What does each give to the other? Is Mjolnir only a really tough hammer that can is enchanted to be able to return when thrown. Does Thor only have some vague lightning powers and the really big storms come from the hammer? Are they so mixed it is impossible to tell?

The hammer is only tool. Thor himself claimed he relied on Mjolnir too much but without it, there is not much difference in the power he wields through command of the weather or his godly force and the magical enchantments it provides. The force of the hammer is capable of shattering a planet, Thor should have no problem doing the same using his weather manipulation, Thermo or God-blast. He flies by throwing then directing the hammer whilst steadying its speed yet without it can be pushed by Wind sending him moving at equal or greater velocities.

But it doesn't go without say that Mjolnir does give Thor many advantages and has aided him for decades against battles he possibly could not have won, techniques that come with the hammer such as Anti-vortex, Anti-force, ability to absorb and redirect allowed him to defeat foes his own power-set were unable to contend with. A great presentation of the Odinforce capabilities and how deadly they can be utilised by an expert, so it may not increase his physical attributes but it enhances his overall standard.

    I'd say 70% Thor - 30% Mjolnir

I'd concur with that except I'd go Thor 60 Mjolnir 40 because whilst Thor is most assuredly a warrior born and among the strongest of the Aesir, Mjolnir gives him the over-the-top powers others, such as the Warriors Three and Sif don't enjoy. Thor would still be ultra-strong and an ultra-badass, but he wouldn't be Odin-level powerful without Mjolnir. At least not until he inherited the Odinforce.

The strength, invulnerability, durability and elemental power is all innate within Thor. The trans-dimensional travel, super speed, and flight are Mjolnir. Mjolnir also harnesses his own power and gives it focus. Remember Thor is the son of an Elder Goddess of the universe so being half Aesir and half Elder god makes him the most powerful Asgardian by a clear margin.

I would say 80% thor and 20% Mjolnir. Whilst mjolnir does provide him with many abilities he would not be able to perform on his own, most of thors power-set is innate. Whilst flight is debatable he is definitely able to hover without it using the wind, that also compliments the fact that he can use/manipulate the weather without it and has been seen doing so on larger scales, like when he fought malekith recently in the god of thunder series. His strength is innate and stale-mated the hulk in terms of strength without mjolnir and his durability is obviously innate also. The main things thor can't do without mjolnir includes teleportation, super flight, life-force absorption/detection, using it as a shield whilst spinning it and the obvious additional physical damage potential mjolnir has.

Actually, Thor's flight comes from Thor being able to throw it so fast it can carry a person sized object while moving at great speeds.

50/50 Thor is Mjolnir and Mjolnir is Thor. Mjolnir has a few things that dont come from Thor. Thor needs it and it he always will. He is bonded to it so there is no separating from it

I know this is a 3 year old post but when I came across your question I couldn't help not to reply, to add something useful here's a link that will answer all of your questions concering this question:

It's a thread with well researched info by me where I post scans showcasing Thor's powers without the aid of mjornir, it's strictly for that purpose so you won't see scans flying about with Thor holding his hammer!!! Obviously there's context to the ones which are there, but it's worth a check out and I have invited a lot of Thor fans to check out. So far it's been voted (or at least described) as the best Thor thread showcasing his abilities without mjornir

What's also good about the thread is that comic covers are posted for each and every scan posted there, each issue number is posted for every scan posted there and there is detailed information on all of the scans posted there!!! But don't take my word for it, check it out. But to give you a preview there are feats of:

    a) Leaping high like Superman or the Hulk without his hammer

    b) Brawling without his hammer (and trust me there are many of those)

    c) Levitating without his hammer

    d) Strength feats without his hammer

    e) Durability feats against fire, tanking machine guns to the chest, lasers, cosmic blasts, frozen with magic ice in the inside and out, explosions and even being hit with lightning

    f) Flying in space without his hammer

    g) And even feats showcasing his acrobactics

There are even scans of him in his early life where he showcases his strength and skills before he obtained mjornir

    Worth the check
