Thor is based on Tor the thunder god of norse mythology.
Origin
The son of Odin and Gaea, the oldest goddess of the Earth, Thor was raised in Asgard. Thor grew up with his step-brother Loki. Loki was always jealous of the favored Thor. Odin had Mjolnir, a mystical hammer enchanted by magic, created for Thor when he became a worthy warrior.
After years of training, Thor was presented with the hammer and became Asgard's greatest warrior. Thor spent several centuries fighting in battles and facing many adventures.
Thor eventually became arrogant and selfish. As an act of humility, Odin decided to create a human persona for Thor, Dr. Donald Blake, and removed all his powers and memories. Blake eventually discovered what appeared to be an ordinary walking stick during an alien invasion. When Blake struck a boulder with the stick, it was transformed into Mjolnir and he became Thor once again.
Thor could revert back and forth between Dr. Blake and Thor by striking the stick/hammer against the ground. Thor began fighting evil and was one of the founding Avengers after Loki tricked the Hulk and other heroes to fight each other. Thor spent several years fighting on both Earth and Asgard.
Ragnarok
In an epic battle against Loki and Surtur, Ragnarok came about, the end of Asgard. Thor was given the choice to join the gods Those Who Sit Above in Shadow rather than succumbing to Ragnarok. Thor declined and battled against them. Upon defeating them, Thor seemed to join his fallen comrades and died.
Civil War
Mjolnir returned to Earth from space. Doctor Doom attempted to claim it and failed. Shortly after it seemed that Thor returned to fight in the "Civil War." It turned out that Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic had created a clone from a hair sample Tony had gathered from their first meeting. The clone was not mentally stable, and during his first battle against the anti-registration outlaws killed Goliath. During the final confrontation of the Civil War, the Android/Clone of Thor was destroyed by Hercules. What will be in store when the gods discover that man attempted to clone one of them?
Return
Recently, Thor awoke from the Void where Donal Blake was there. Donald Blake told Thor that it wasn't the Gods that created man, but man who created the Gods. With this knowledge Thor decided he wanted to live again. He then appeared on a dirt road where he found a motel to stay at.
Thor then rebuilt Asgard, lifting it from the ground. Confronted by Tony Stark, Thor easily destroyed his armor and sent him away, planning on returning to discuss the violation of his genetic code. Thor's quest now included hunting down Asgardians in human form. On one such excursion, he comes across Loki, now transformed into a woman, who wants to become an ally, unbeknownst to Thor that he was conspiring with Dr. Doom.
Powers
Thor possesses the characteristic physiology of all asgardians, with muscle and bone significantly denser than humans, giving him superhuman strength, resistance to diseases, superior endurance and superhuman durability. However, he is not immortal. Thor is the finest phyiscal specimen of all the Asgardians, capable of lifting over 100 tons, well over three times the strength of the average Asgardian male.
With his mystical hammer, Mjolnir, Thor can control weather elements. His godly energies can be focused into blasts through Mjolnir that have devastating results, this blast is also know as the God Blast, which is one of the most powerful of Thor's offensives. He can absorb other energies with it. It obeys his commands and will return to him after being thrown. Thor can create portals into other dimensions by spinning Mjolnir in circles. At one point, Thor could time travel by spinning his hammer in similar fashion, but that power was removed by Immortus. Mjolnir can only be lifted by those who are "worthy" including Thor, Odin, Tiwaz, Red Norvell, Beta Ray Bill, Hercules and Captain America. To everyone else, it cannot be moved.
It's a common misconception that Thor is able to fly, however he cannot fly, he just throws Mjolnir while holding on to the handle and sort of mimics flight.
Thor has also used the Belt of Strength, which doubles his strength while he wears it. However, when he removes the belt he is weakened for some time, so Thor avoids wearing it unless a significant threat requires it.
Thor currently possesses the Odinforce, granting him all the powers that his father Odin had in life.

Thor in the zombieverse is as most other heroes transformed into a zombie. He cannot longer carry Mjolnir since he's no longer worthy. Thor is the one that rescues Nova from being consumed after Daredevil fights zombie Spiderman to protect Nova. Daredevil is eventually infected with the virus by being bitten on the back by Spiderman. Nova is taken by Thor and the Fantastic Four up to the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier. Thor appears before the meeting with the uninfected superheroes and hears Nick Fury's plan to solve the problem with the zombies. However, the Fantastic Four is infected by the virus and they assault the Helicarrier. They start spreading the infection to the others and Nick Fury orders Thor to destroy the machine that can lead to different dimensions of alternate universes. During the process, Thor is infected by the virus. Thor loses his worthiness to hold Mjolnir because of his virus and consuming other people. He replaces Mjolnir by finding a cement block with a pipe stuck to it, making it look like Mjolnir. Later on, Thor gets involved in the chase for Magneto to consume him. Thor meets Magneto and attempts to bite, but then he has one of Hawkeye's arrows pierce his throat by Magneto. However, it doesn't affect Thor, for he is already a zombie. Thor becomes one of the people to consume Magneto and also one of the first to grab Magneto. During the Silver Surfer incident, Thor becomes involved in the attempt to eat the Silver Surfer. They do succeed in consuming the Silver Surfer, but Thor is one of the zombies that does not have share of the Silver Surfer. He is one of the zombies that dispute with the zombies that consumed Silver Surfer and fight them. After the fight, Thor is killed by Giant Man. Giant Man kills Thor by consuming him and then spitting him out from his mouth, revolting the taste of dead flesh and tells the zombies that eating a zombie has a disgusting taste.
