Review: Thor: The Mighty Avenger #1

    The Story

It’s a very straight to the point approach that takes some similar details from Thor's regular titles and uses them in new ways to introduce us to characters like Jane Foster and Thor for the first time. In this new continuity you can enter this title without any idea who Thor is and not be lost at all. Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee make for a very strong pair providing a simple, yet perplexing version of the Norse god of thunder.

    The Good

Let's see... Well first Langridge really brings a certain charismatic flare to Thor and the rest of his characters seem to be very expressive and intriguing enough not be boring. All while the art ties the whole deliver of the concept together, the art is very simplistic yet really clever. With that being said overall this title is a very intresting take on the source mythology and in doing so it delivers a remarkably solid read for a first issue. One more thing in particular though about the plot as well is that it's very reminiscent of what is known about the story from Thor's upcoming feature film so far. Which I think really makes it a fairly decent starting point for someone who knows nothing really about Thor, and wants some info on the back-story as reference before they go check out the movie.

    The Bad

If there's anything bad about this, it's the fact that the first issue offers very little exposure to Thor's Asgardian origins. It's only on that last page that he reveals himself to be god. So I guess will just have to wait  and see about characters like Odin or Loki or any of Thor's comrades from Asgard. Regardless, and any expectations shelved for the moment, it's still great to see Thor mortal for at least a little while.

    The Verdict: 4/5

Overall this title is very light, imaginative, and easily accessible in comparison to Thor's other current running books. This new title really seems to deliver on the refreshing back-to-basics interpretation of an already established character.  So with the confines of previous continuity broken, it's only just begun, to revel everything silly and wonderful about Thor. That being said hopefully by association they can also incorporate some of the rest of what Marvel has to offer in such a fashion. So one last thing if your interested in a comic that’s just really lots of fun, that has great art, and intricate character work, be sure to pick this up.

What an odd little comic. When I first heard news of this comic, I was excited only for the art, with no real need for a greater Thor fix. See, Marvel (and DC) seem to think that certain characters NEED multiple books. Hence Batman, Batman and Robin, Streets of Gotham. Hence Invincible Iron Man and Iron Man Legacy. Hence why even though Amazing Spider-Man comes out thrice a month we still get Web of Spider-Man and Peter Parker and all the minis. Despite what Marvel tells us though, we don't NEE...

      Hammer to Fall. 0

The first issue of Thor: The Mighty Avenger introduces us to a very different Odinson than the one we have become accustomed to in The Straczynski and Gillen runs of late, this Thor is younger and more brash so I’m going to say from the get go that if your picking this up to see the current incarnation of the character then you are going to be disappointed.  The story surrounds Jane Foster who is no longer a nurse but a curator of a museum, (probably the biggest change to the established history...
