    Doom Unmasked!

Phew! I`ve been reading so much of this new-fangled modern stuff recently (even comics from this year - good grief, whatever next?) I thought I`d slip back into the relatively halcyon calm of the Bronze Age...
So I drew out this one - Stan Lee! John Buscema! Thor! Doc Doom! - I`m sold. A classic story starts here, with the mighty Thor`s clash with wicked villain and monarch, Doctor Doom...
Doctor Doom has kidnapped French scientist, Professor Lefarge, forcing him to work on missile silos in the kingdom of Latveria. His daughter, Cosette, who Doom was using as a hostage, escapes to New York, to wave a protest-banner outside the Latverian Embassy with a gang of `hippie anarchists`...
As luck would have it (as it so often did in the day) she falls in with Donald Blake with a plea to help her enslaved father (a letter to the French Embassy first luv, surely?). Blake needs to gain the Latverian monarch`s confidence, and taking it as red that Doom`s use of a mask is to conceal some facial disfigurement, he hatches a cunning plan: Plant an ad for plastic surgery in the classified section of the Daily Bugle! That`ll do it!
And it does, Donald Blake soon finds himself in Latveria, and one look behind the mask of Victor von Doom convinces Blake that this jobs too big for him!

Sure, the story is rather naive and full of holes, but it never bothered me. I`m a sucker for nostalgia, but John Buscema can do no wrong and the uncomplicated stories from this era appeal to me. Worth reading - remember, the Marvel Comics you`re picking up in the stores today have their roots in this sort of vintage stuff...
