An Average Issue with Some Notable Firsts

This is a pretty average issue of Thor, with the Thunder God traveling to Rigel to destroy the 'planet lock' that Tana Nile, would-be colonizer of Earth has activated.

There are however a number of noteworthy things about this issue. First, we are introduced to the leader of the Rigellians, a minor character to be sure, but as a reluctant 'Grand Commissioner' once again we see a break with the stereotype of alien invaders. More importantly, this is the first time a Recorder robot is shown, as well as the first appearance of Ego, the Living Planet - although he's introduced in another one of those poor photo collage prints that don't reproduce well in comics.

Along with all that, if you take a gander at the letters page in here, you'll notice the very first letter is a letter from none other than Dave Cockrum - the future X-Men artist! Then serving in the military, (it was during the Vietnam War) Cockrum writes in to disparage the frequent appearance of Hercules in the comic, who he fears is going to supplant Thor!
