Plot Summary

Overview

A freak thunderstorm hit the wide open spaces of Oklahoma…the same day a young doctor named Donald Blake drove into town!

Now the friendly residents of this cozy burg are just as puzzled by the walking stick-carrying young man as they are by the storm clouds gathering on the horizon.

Little do they know an honest-to-goodness god of Asgard walks among them, searching for his own home in the heart of theirs…and he’s got big plans for their dusty little town!

But what connection does Asgard–and Norse mythology have to the wide-open plains of Oklahoma?

    Thor goes to Oklahoma

I've never been a huge fan of Thor, but I've always liked the character. There was just something about having this Norse God interacting with humans and being so far out of his element he doesn't understand them most of the time, but trying to help them anyways. It was never a secret that Thor was coming back, but it was a surprise (to me at least) that it took Marvel this long to bring him back.

When we finally saw Mjolnir show up in Fantastic Four right before Civil War I loved it. It was mysterious... we didn't get any answers, which was fine. Then someone shows up with the initials D.B. on his suitcase... he picks up the hammer and that was it. It didn't take very long for people to figure out that D.B. stood for Donald Blake, Thor's long forgotten alter ego. That was it for me... I was hooked. I thought it was a great set up that made me want more, and all this happened before Civil War.

Last month we finally got Thor #1. Honestly I don't find it was hyped all that much. The simple fact that Thor had been missing for so long, and what was done in the FF book was enough for me to look forward to this... add JMS as the writer and I was there. Well the first issue was... well... just "ok" really. I expected a little more from the Donald Blake angle, and expected the whole thing to be a little more monumental. Although there's still a few things that I find intriguing to say the least. Not much really happened in issue #1.

Issue #2... well... a little bit more happens. It's more set up then anything else however. The characterization of Thor seems all good and well, but most of the story has comedic elements that are borderline goofy. I was expecting something a little more serious for a character that had excepted the fact that he would be gone forever... and is now back on Earth and very much alive. The issue isn't horrible by any means, but it's just not what I was expecting. When a character like Thor returns after being gone for years (literally), you first want a good story as to where he was and how he returned... and secondly you want to see how the rest of the Marvel Heroes react to this. Especially since a lot has changed since he's been gone. Of course this is all MY expectations and I can't speak for everyone. I still think this title is worth checking out because I'm sure JMS is going somewhere interesting with this.
