See, this is a good teaser. AMC’s just released their official poster for THE WALKING DEAD a little more than a month before the show’s Halloween debut. If you’re familiar with the comic, you’ll know that this scene comes right out of the second issue, when Rick Grimes rides into Atlanta on horseback looking for his family and any other survivors he’ll hopefully run into. I’m not sure if this composition's borrowed from any specific panel in the title, but it’s a profoundly spooky image that evokes many urban evacuations that’ve followed natural calamities in the South.
As I was saying, I think the art of movie/TV posters is often underserved. I can think of more poorly-composited, “floating heads” photoshop jobs that I can care to. I think the best ones are glimpses of scenes like this that are minimalistic while still giving you enough to chew on. Recall that first PHANTOM MENACE poster with lil’ Anakin walking next to his Darth Vader shadow or, more recently, the positively-ghoulish DARK KNIGHT teaser where the Joker’s writing “Why so serious?” in blood on a fogged window. Like I said… there’s an art to it, and this one definitely gives you a simple, stark image that conveys and implies what it needs to without beating you on the head. You know something’s seriously wrong in this city, and the later context of the undead plague makes it all the more ominous. == TEASER ==
You know, considering that WALKING DEAD looks primed to do pretty well on your telly, I figure it’s suitable to ask what other comics you Comic Vine maniacs think would make good TV shows. Kirkman’s always said he wanted WALKING DEAD to explore the characters of the traditional zombie apocalypse with more time and in more detail than movies allow - -- so there’s a bold line separating something that’s suitable for a show versus a film.
My votes for Vertigo’s EXTERMINATORS series from a couple years back. It'd be perfect for HBO or Showtime.
