The Walking Dead Episode 3.11 'I Ain't a Judas' Review

Posted by k4tzm4n (44235 posts) - - Show Bio

Spoilers below!

Andrea, why must you make me facepalm so much? She has without question been the most frustrating character on this show and now she basically has an entire episode dedicated to her. Can you hear that from way over there? That's the sound of me sighing as hard as I can.

This episode focuses on Andrea's conflict over who to trust. There's the Governor -- the super shady and transparently evil dude that she sleeps with -- or her old friends who flat-out tell her that her boyfriend attacked them and is pure evil. Wow, that's a tough choice, isn't it?!

Putting a spotlight on Andrea's "conflict" is infuriating. The choice is obvious to literally everyone except for her. Sure, she has a warm bed with the Governor and someone to hold at night... but what about all of the blatant lies? The fish tanks full of heads? Him clearly lying about the road being blocked off? Him attacking the prison? Making everyone part of the army? So on and so freaking on.

Look, I get she can't just kill the man in his sleep (did anyone honestly think she would?) -- it takes a reaaaal cold heart to do that. It's good that she's finally questioning things more, but talk about too little too late. It's clear the Governor doesn't trust her anymore and why she returned to him is beyond my comprehension. And now knowing he attacked them, there's no way she can honestly believe there's any chance of a truce. It's funny how she notices Rick changed so quickly but totally has the blinders on when it comes to sweet ol' Philip. Also, remind me why she thinks she can fully trust Milton, the Governor's right-hand-man? Furthermore, did anyone else find it hilarious that Carol needed to bring up T-Dog twice because Andrea clearly didn't care to ask about him at all? I hope you're getting more respect up in heaven, T-Dog.

Tyreese, what are you doing, man?! He flat-out says Rick is crazy but the rest of the people aren't bad, then seconds later he basically agrees to potentially kill them so he can earn his place in this new town! Ben and Allen are scum bags, but Tyreese was a man of morals back at the prison and stood up for what was right... where'd that all go?

I have mixed feelings about Merle. I'm super happy that he's playing along with the team now, but that felt like way too quick of a transition. I know he wants to be by his brother's side and he realizes this is where he's has to be, but it's tough to believe he could shed his personality so easily. I was hoping for a little more conflict with Merle before he turned a new leaf.

While other characters are frustrating (Andrea) or developing at the speed of light (Merle), the show has impressed me with how they've changed Carol so much over time. It's clear she's now a product of his world. She hasn't become callous, just tougher and far more realistic. Her cruel yet logical plan for how Andrea should deal with the Governor was shocking and clearly needed to help Andrea realize how dire this situation truly is.

As for what I loved in this episode, it was especially nice to see Carl lay down some strong logic on his father. Just like Carol, it's great to see how much Carl has changed throughout the seasons and it was a pleasant surprise to see him be the voice of reason. Additionally, the make up for the Governor's wound looked fantastic and there's an absolutely brutal curbstomp thrown in there. No episode would be compete without some harsh violence against zombies, right?

Overall, this was just an okay episode laced with quite a few aggravating Andrea moments. She's finally starting to see the obvious and I hope this epiphany lasts. To see her flip flop even more or try push for a peaceful conflict with this situation would be really annoying to watch.

I believe the meme depicting Andrea as follows works best: "I'm only on here to make bad decisions."

Now Lori is gone she's become the most annoying character. Then again I've begged for her death since season 2 where as with Lori I grew tired of her in season 3

@ARMIV2: I searched for it, asked the wife for it - can't find it yet. If I do - I'll share.

Here is my review for the episode:

Bit of a slow episode and I totally agree with the sentiments regarding Andrea. I mean...really, lady? I think the Governor simply has a hold on her because she clearly has a thing for bad men. Shane--anyone, anyone? That and she likes messing with the one eye. Bad pun intended.

That aside, I don't know regarding Merle. I think he's just playing his cards for his favor, and using a poker face to survive long as he can with the group. M'chonne ( sp?) pretty much summed it up best with her glares at Merle when lamely tried to make peace with her. Although, it is possible Merle could be trying to make amends but just in Merle's way! Herschel is giving him encouragement to go down the right path, so it will be interesting to see where and how he plays out.

Yeah just an OK episode, could have used just a bit more action. I guess Andrea is the new Lori.

I don't understand the change in her character from the book to the tv show....she's the most annoyingly gullible and naive character on the show and yet in the book she's this strong and confident character who is an essential member of the 'team'.

#12 Posted by agonzo1 (17 posts) - - Show Bio

@Decept-O:

It's like an "Okay" episode because we're just on the build to the season finale. If you want action packed every episode...it's probably better just to dvr the last few episodes and watch it marathon style...which isn't such a bad idea if the internet didn't exist, lol

Its fun to see the differences from the comics. I was hoping the would use Tyreese to ground Rick, but it seems to be going another direction. Andrea has been pissing me off all season, I mean can somebody be so blind to the world around them.

Good point about the road not being blocked, totally forgot about that. Andrea is very annoying and I wish she would just pick a side. I don't see how she could go back... not really a tough choice, BUT Michonne, Glenn, Merle etc should have told her everything. Glenn: " Yeah, so Phil tore the clothes off of (can't think of name) and used scare tactics of rape and my body dismemberment while I was being tortured and beat to death". Merle: "Yes, that is all true, and the governor always made me keep tabs on you and Michonne and we often trapped people and killed them to take their supplies and lied to everyone about it." etc etc. They didn't do a very good job trying to convince her imo, but the choice still should have been obvious. I really liked Tyreese, and I KNEW this was going to happen when Crazy Rick went off on them... I am still hoping he turns out cool and helps Rick etc out, but I doubt it...

Also, they took the prison with barely any shots fired, why can't they do that again?! Its not hard, just attract them to the fence and have Merle or others stab them in the head!!!

@agonzo1: Not saying I want every episode to be action packed. This episode could have had a bit more action. I don't think I am the only one saying this. I do know this is building up, well aware of it.

Ugh Andrea......why won't she just get eaten already.

#19 Posted by SavageDragon (2252 posts) - - Show Bio

This episode was alright. My predictions from based on the preview on next episode I think Rick and Carl could end up getting captured and possibly at the end Michonne and Carl escape back. I have a feeling the Governor captures Rick and does something to him from the comics. Tyreese and his lady friend see how psycho the Governor is and they help Rick escape back to the Prison.

@k4tzm4n Before we discount Tyrese and the group, we didn't see them escape remember. I'm betting its Ricks plan to get them in the inside of Woodbury and likely a condition of his to be part of the group. Why would Tyrese's group trust Rick? Lets not forget they were inside the prison when the attack came. Double agents guys. Just wait.

They left the prison right after Rick flipped out and saw Lori.

The episode was ok in my opinion. Kinda blah, not much going on. Too bad andrea didn't get to have a conversation with maggie. Andrea still probably would have went back to Gov though.

Hurray! Rick's not crazy. It's about freaking time.

One of the main complaints I hear about this show is that it's too slow, but really, I don't understand why people are made about this. Any GOOD show/movie about zombies shouldn't be about zombies, but the people trying to survive in the world. The show NEEDS scenes where the people interact with one another, sit down and have normal conversations. It can't be action 24/7. To an extent, the comic does this too, only the comic has more shock value having more characters becoming endangered more often.  I loved this episode, and the series as a whole.

I know, right? It's almost as if the crew is getting dumber and dumber as the season progresses.

TV Andrea is really starting to piss me off. Fairly annoying, really naive, and nothing like comics Andrea. She'll probably end up killing the Governor for "fooling" her all this time

There's some things from the show I like that weren't in the show like Darryl and Meryl, or how Judith has a chance to live now, and how Carol isn't as creepy (she tried to get a threesome with Rick and Lori twice), but there's a lot I don't like how it transitioned from comic to show. Like how Andrea, Lori, and Carl were so much more annoying, Shane survived longer than he should have, they mistrusted Miochene for so long, Rick can barely function now, and more.

#37 Posted by Jonny_Anonymous (33451 posts) - - Show Bio

Andrea is the most infuriating and idiotic character in the show an has been since season 1, she went on the road to bitchville the day her sister died and just never turned back, I pray every week that she wakes up to find a zombie feasting on her intestines, that's such a strange change of pace since she was my second fav character in the comic. I'm also not liking the direction the show has went with Tyreese, at this time in the comic he was basically the co-leader of the group and even laid Rick out when he started to get out of hand not to mention the gym hall scene.

Andrea has been getting the business end of it from Day 1, and everyone is saying how can she be with the govenor my opinion rick is a "bad hair day" from being the govenor himself. And lets not forget they did leave her to die, I didnt hear about them searching for her during the winter

#41 Posted by spidershamrock (1181 posts) - - Show Bio

The worst and most boring episode I've seen of the Walking Dead, I dont mind a lack of action if the story and dialogue are good but this episode was based around the filler-centric Andrea. I dont care for her anymore in this show and she is really starting to get on my nerves

#42 Posted by ForeverMan (143 posts) - - Show Bio

I guess now that Lori is dead it's only right that Andrea go back to being the absolute worst again.

#43 Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus (6885 posts) - - Show Bio

I gotta admit, it was pretty nice almost getting to see Andrea derriere at the end of it, and for a stark moment I really did think she was going to end Philip right then and there. Good episode though...you can definitely see the drive for mutually assured destruction between Team Grimes and Woodbury. At this point though, I'm pretty much through with Andrea at this point though, just wanna see her torn to pieces already. Andrea's the epitome of the perfect opportunist and as far as I'm concerned really is a dead woman walking without actually having been bitten.
