Walking Dead #68: Is Hope an Anchor?
Last issue, Eugene dropped a bomb when he confessed that he was lying about this secret government sanctuary located in Washington D.C. that would not only feed the starving survivors but also give answers regarding the zombie outbreak.
It was all one big fat red herring. To make matters even worse, it would appear the crew has found themselves in an area with more frequent zombie herds.
Now, a man coming out of the darkness tells our heroes that there is indeed a sanctuary 20 miles outside of D.C. that has been tracking Rick and his survivors down in order to recruit them.
Is he telling the truth? Trust is something that doesn’t come cheap in the Walking Dead Zombieland.
Kirkman writes these characters as if he’s unconscious. The paranoia is so thick that you can cut it with a knife and yet, the desperation. These people are so desperate and vulnerable that they will buy anything as an excuse to live another day.
This reminds me a lot of the dilemma set up in Matheson’s I Am Legend. Someone comes to Neville and tells him that humanity is still alive and yet, he is so far gone that he refuses to believe that what he’s suffered through has a kinder resolution.
Its at this point, something appears to be too good to be true. However, what if they are wrong? Rick wrestles with his nihilism after being wrong on more than one occasion and in this world, one mistake cost lives.
Rating: Borrow it. While the dialogue is strong, this is better collected in a trade where the whole story flows.
