Cloak, Dagger, Mimic, Daken, Weapon Omega, Namor and Emma Frost. The new X-Men sanctioned by Norman Osborn.

That's our cover to an issue I had to read twice to figure out how I felt about everything going on in it. I liked it, I just wasn't sure if it was "Run to the comic shop and pick this up!!! NOW!" or "If you like X-Men, you'll enjoy this" good. While I haven't been reading Uncanny at all, I did my research before this event started and being that it's 6 Chapters long, I can only hope it will all flow smoothly and quickly.

It almost has the feel Secret Invasion had, if it had not spent 6 issues documenting the first hour of the Invasion. This issue seems to be the reaction to Utopia's first Chapter and I like that it doesn't try to keep everything in  one tight ball of story and allows the story to take place over the course of what seems to be about two nights at this point.

The team Osborn picked is a little questionable, I don't completely understand how Cloak and Dagger fit in yet (beyond teleporting and healing). But the promise of a side series tells me we'll know eventually. And we don't get to see much of the team in action but we do get that sense that the public display about midway through the issue is the last time the team will get to wave at the public (much like the Avengers were told by Norman is Dark Avengers #2).

Curfews are put into place until the need for a martial law state dies down. Cyclops has decided to wait things out, it's to bad the rest of the mutant community doesn't react the same way and a few mutants start another riot.

I'm really not giving away any big spoilers here, there is the hinting of something darker going on with Dark Beast, but over all, the cover gives most of the team away anyway. The art is good, the writing is good, I just can't figure out how I feel about Emma's choices and how it all plays into Norman's plans. I'll be back next month... well, actually I have to pick up Dark Avengers first. Love crossovers, it makes everything faster.

If you like the X-Men and the first chapter, Utopia, pick this up.

Chapter 2 of the utopia crossover is here, well it has been for a couple of days now but o well.

ill start with the art, its Dodson which in my eyes is great i think he  draws the x-men than anyone has recently thats pretty much all i can say about the art apart from how i loved the way Namor was introduced by emma the look of that scene was pretty cool.

Now for the story, i wasnt expecting much from this book to be honest, but it was pleasently suprising we all knew we'd get the ussual team introductions etc but even though this is the point of the issue it doesnt feel like it takes too much time to do this its covered in maybe 5 pages which isnt that bad really. story wise i can see how this is going to cause friction between emma and scott but suprisingly he doesnt seem that angry towards her he even complements her stratagy which i found funny. the suprise i hinted about in my review for utopia pt1 was as expected certain characters arent as they seem, there isnt really much more to say to be hones about this issue other than i really hope everyone who reads marvel comics atm is reading this and i just want to know what the omega machine is it seems very interesting and what happens in a couple of pages made me have a few suspicions as to what it does, all i can say is i cant wait till the next chapter.

    The Dark X-Men are here!

The second part of this crossover begins straight where the first ended, with the introduction of Charles Xavier to the public and press where he voices his concerns for Cyclops recent actions as mutant kinds ‘leader’. Very unlike Charles, he commits himself to Norman Osborn’s ‘Mutant Solution’ and for most of the first part of this issue Fraction uses Normans voice in the captions which accompanies Dodson’s scenes from the riots the X-Men are involved in, in and around San Francisco. This is an effective way of getting Norman’s points and mission statement across without boring the reader.

One of the highlights of this issue was the introduction of the Dark X-Men. As Osborn’s explains to the press in this issue, his theory is ‘mutant problems, mutant solutions’, and the Dark X-Men are that solution. The team consists of Cloak & Dagger, Mimic, Daken, Omega, Dark Beast, Namor & led by Emma Frost! Fraction gives us his usual funny captions to introduce the characters which are always great and Norman gives us a further bit of background on each character when he introduces them to Emma. We are not sure at this stage whether Emma has turned sides against the X-Men or whether she is undercover as an X-Men operative waiting for the chance to stab Norman in the back. This is one of the more interesting storylines in this issue and I look forward to seeing how it plays out. Oh and spoilers on………… the sneaky and un-characteristic Charles Xavier is in fact none other than the shape shifting Mystique in disguise, working for Osborn. The fact that Charles was a shape shifter was made pretty obvious early on as it seems the real Prof X is locked up in a H.A.M.M.E.R headquarters. Another nice part of the story, one that is sure will be addressed in further chapters.

At the end of the issue the Dark X-Men are drawn out on their first mission to control a rouge group of mutants including Hellion, Sunspot, Avalanche and Adam X (blast from the past!) who want to make a stand against the way Norman and other humans are treating them and their fellow mutants. The two groups meet in Union Square and begin to battle, but we are stopped by seeing the outcome until the next chapter, which is continued in Dark Avengers #7.

This issue was mostly more set up of the storyline but it was well executed by Fraction, his handle of characters like Osborn and Emma was very good and I’m very excited about the introduction of the Dark X-Men and how their story will continue. I’m also confident that lots of action and plot twists will follow in the following chapters and this story will continue to get better.

The art by Dodson is excellent, with the Dark X-Men new costumes looking particularly cool. He does draw a strange looking Venom though, that would my only complaint from his work on this issue.

Overall good stuff, X-fans should defiantly be reading this.

I'm not a huge fan of crossover events (secret invasion, dark reign) but dark reign is pretty different i like seeing the bad guys pretending to good guys but why is there now Utopia? Utopia is a crossover within a cossover but i got a copy of the first part and it wasn't too shabby i'm digging Utopia it has potential. I like the chaos, everyone is scattered some want to fight some want to resolve the situation and all the conflicting personalities but most of all the action thats bound to go down. We all knew the dark xavier was't going to be the real guy but at the end of the 1st issue the real xavier says their powers are being taken so i was intrgued but in this issue there was nothing discussing that or elaborating except for the omega machine...whatever that does. I like how Osbourne just keeps manipulating the world more and and initiating the dark x men is just another way to pull the veil over the eyes of the public and Mystique/Xavier just helps the decption and adds to his cause. But whatever ths issue is pretty entertaining i like the action and like seeing the world against Scott/Cyclops and his crew because (fake) xavier distances himself from the (real) x men. O and Emma is revealed as a "traitor" i bet there will be a lovers quarrel.
