Chris Bachalo is a bit of an acquired taste, I think - his figures are quite peculiar looking, though I like his very individual style very much. He's done a great job with Rachel Summers on this cover, not so much perhaps with her as such, though I do like how she looks a bit pouty and cross! It's the great use of rock and lava to spell out the book's name that really lifts this cover into the exceptional. Nice contrast of oranges, browns and yellows. Two other points. First, by pushing Rachel right forward on the cover, Bachalo avoids drawing her feet - I don't think he likes feet, does he? Secondly, for another great image of Rachel by Bachalo, check out two months' time, on 468, where he produces a superb rendition of the phoenix tattoo on her back. It didn't make my top 250, but it's also a great cover.

I have ranked this cover no 168 as part of a long term project I am producing on my own blog 'marvel-ous' on blogspot.com re: my favourite marvel comic book covers. Please visit http://dmstarz.blogspot.com and check out the other covers that have made my top 250.
