Very Nice Ending; Very Nice Ride
This issue had the best cover of the arc. 'Nuff said.
The Days of Future Present was a twisted sort of tale that left more questions through the first three issues than answers. This issue does its part and gives the answers. Being the last issue, however, it does have its problems in having to explain too much in limited space, but this is easily overlooked because the story is told well enough. Especially gratifying is the supplemental story "The Fundamental Things" in which it is shown that Wolverine influenced Franklin and Rachel to "come clean" with the group back in New York.
The story, however, does not solve the issues between Rachel and Jean Grey. This is a fantastic internal struggle for both women and I'm excited to see it played out in the regular monthly canon. Also nice is that we see that the future is liquid, but also set. An odd dichotomy, yes, but something that gives the writer's enough room for delving into this problem in the future.
As to the art, it was so much more enjoyable than both the New Mutants and X-Factor annuals, but was about on par with the Fantastic Four quality. It was nice to see the more venerable issues treated properly. The writing in the X-Men annual (helmed by Chris Claremont) was also very nice. Not too much inner monologues going on and no over analyzing situations. The pictures were allowed to tell their story and the words filled in. It was a great balance. My only real complaint (quality-wise) is that first art piece included at the end. What's up with that idiot face taking up 1/4 of the picture?
