Once, the Umbrella Academy was unstoppable. Under the tutelage of their guardian and mentor, Dr. Reginald Hargreeves, its members spent their childhoods fighting evil and honing their extraordinary gifts.

Until something went terribly wrong.

Now, nine years later, the estranged members of the Umbrella Academy are reunited by the death of the only parent they've ever known and the rise of a new and terrible threat. Will they be able to overcome their history for long enough to save the world-one more time?

Conceived and written by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance), Umbrella Academy features interior art by Eisner Award-nominated artist Gabriel Ba (De:Tales), colors by Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart, and covers by multiple-Eisner Award-winning painter James Jean (Fables).

I wasn't sure if this was going to be just a hyped book marketed to the 18-35 crowd the same way as Hollywood movie just because of Gerard Way's rock n' roll success. I had read several articles about his dreams of bringing this to fruition and his passion impressed me.

The artwork is stylized with a hint of childish likeness as if a Saturday morning cartoon storyboard was laid in front of you. Lovely heavy inking gives a goth's touch without being uber darkedy-dark-vampy. And we all know Dave Stewart colors are always on the mark; he's won enough awards that he doesn't need to prove anything more.

But, I admit, the story is intriguing -- and there's a chimp and possible gorilla body transplant for crying out loud! You know you want to love this book!

Gerard Way (MCR) hit it off with this comic-I did not know what to expect but I read a article in Wizard mag and found it worth checking out. The story leads into the series with some back round that leave a heap of questions. The characters are really not likeable but grow on U. Clearly there is a sibling rivalry and it will be a focal point in the series. U get a insight on what their powers and how they were trained. Their (prof. X)/father figure-the Monocle- is a complete opposite (prof. X) and almost can be called a bad father figure. He clearly has favorites and doesn't mind showing it. The begging leads the story to have some messed up relationships between the team. The world Way created is fresh and has promise. This comic leaves a lot to the imagination, but hopefully it will all be reveled. I definitely will be collecting every issue. It is worth getting.

i am a big fan of My Chemical Romance and i didn't know the Gerard way comic would be this good. i never thought because of his fame in his band he would get this far with art. the story doesn't get me that excited but it will grow on me and it should grow on anyone who starts to read it. the cover is a great peice of art. the charaters don't get to me but they will grown on me it should be a great comic book series. well done gerard! and all the other writers and artists who help make this comic real!

So I'm a bit late to the party, but figured I'd give my two cents about a comic I've heard about in whispers across comic shops.

Keep in mind I haven't read any other issues beyond this one, so my familiarity with the characters is limited and I may not be giving the series a fair shot based on one first issue.

That said, I expected more than what I got.  Umbrella Academy has a cool name, a cool logo, and what seems to be a dark and ominous start.  A group of kids were all born at the same time, some died, some survived, only 7 were found and gathered under the moniker of the Umbrella Academy...  Sweet!  Creepy kids kicking butt, maybe killing while they're at it?  Count me in!

Wait, they aren't very creepy?  They have odd super powers like a gorilla body and a couple tentacles coming from their chest?  One tries to help fights by contacting spirits who may be able to give some advice?  LAME!

How did such a cool idea with cool bits get twisted into something so seemingly random and light?  Maybe I shouldn't have any expectations or knowledge of who the writer was, or what his artistic style tends to be elsewhere.  Maybe I shouldn't have expected the comic created by that writer to have the same flavor as the rest of his work.  All I know is, after one $1 issue, I'm off of UA for good.  At least now I know...
