Millar & Hitch's signature on the comic book industry is far from Over and the Ultimates should be regarded as a milestone in the Action Comics genre. The crazy but Top-Notch writing skills of Mark Millar and the superb drawing style of Bryan Hitch makes Ultimates 1, in my humble opinion, one of the best works in Marvel. Even though i'm a fan of DC over Marvel, one should appreciate the Epic Works when done.

Captain America's appearance as a "Neanderthal" makes him funny, box-headed and stubborn sometimes, oftenly the target of WASP's (nice revamp by the way) salacious personality. His tough-yet-kind attitude puts him right in the spotlight, the revamp of his costume it's just as Ultimate as the Issue itself.

Nick Fury's portrayal like Samuel L. Jackson is quite funny too, he's just as bad-ass as the classic version is. (Although it will NEVER surpass the charm of it's classic doppelganger) The bad part is that he doesn't smokes cigarretes :(

Then, Tony Stark's and Thor's attitude are nothing but catchy. The god of thunder in a Heavy Metal-esque version, while Tony is just as mean as his classic version, but this Uiltimate Tony is so far. One of my favorite characters, alongside Captain America.

    So, my recommendation is...

READ IT!!! NOW!!!! IT'S AN ORDER!!!! Unless you want a session with the Cap on the Boot Camp on the Triskelion!

This is just one excellent comic book. It is the perfect marriage of art ( Brian Hitch) and writing ( Mark Millar ). Beginning with Captain Americas last mission where he ends up frozen, The story then picks up in the future ( or present day ) where we see Nick Fury trying to put together a superhero team. The art has a kind of chaotic feel to it, that gives it an extraordinary sense of detail, that lets you almost feel what is going on rather than just being the observer that you are.  The writing is also crisp and helps to create a book that ends up being both a good stand alone story, and an excellent first issue.

For those who didn't know this, the Ultimates are actually the Ultimate version of the superhero team Avengers. And by Ultimate I mean, completely different than anything I've ever seen. This book shocked me in ways I never could have believed. Mark Millar created a world of heroes, that were all flawed, dirty and in need of eachother. You could see them working together right of the bat. The insane, hard-hitting writing of Mark Millar is fantastic here. The electric dialogue, the revamped characters... is all wonderful. Albeit, a bit too gore-ish. Marvel chose the right guy for this as no one could have made the Ultimates better than this man here.

    Here we go:

Story: Completely revamped characters and story that will leave you wanting for more. Captain America, Iron Man, Giant Man, Wasp, Bruce Banner, Nick Fury (for crying out loud) were all changed into characters that will better please the new readers of the 21st century. Millar made these characters modern, a move which proved to be dangerous but it panned out well. Like I mentioned before, the story is great, but a little bit too gore-ish.

Art: Perhaps the one thing I didn't ''like''. Bryan Hitch's art is good, but a bit too dark. It fits well with the tone, but he could've included a little bit more style. Otherwise I liked the art.

In closing I give this book a 4.5 out of 5.

MARK MILLER AND BRIAN HITCH ARE AWESOME! THE ULTIMATES #1 IS ONE OF THE BEST COMICS I'VE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO READ. IT HAS THAT DARK LOOK TO IT WHICH I LOVE. THE ULTIMATE INCARNATION OF CAPTAIN AMERICA ROCKS. BETTER EVEN THEN OF THE 616 VERSION. BUCKY BARNES ALSO MAKES HIS ULTIMATE DEBUT. HE'S NOT SO MUCH CAPS PARTNER AS THE 616 VERSION, HE'S MORE OF JUST A FELLOW SOLDIER AND GOOD FRIEND. MAN, AS SOON AS CAP HAS HIS FEET ON ENEMY GROUND HE OPENS A CAN UP ON THE NAZIS. REALLY GREAT. ONE OF THE BEST WAR SCENES IN COMICS I'VE EVER SEEN. THE NAZIS LAUNCH A MISSLE TOWARD THE ALLIES BUT GOOD OLD CAP JUSTS ABOARD THE MISSLE TO SAVE THE DAY. HE SETS THE MISSLE OFF BEFORE IT GETS FAR BUT ALSO COSTS HIM HIS LIFE.(THAT WON'T LAST OF COURSE. JUST READ THE ULTIMATES #2) HIS PAL BUCKY WATCHES FROM AFAR AS CAPTAIN AMERICA SEEMINGLY DIES FROM THE EXPLOSION. THAT IS THE END OF CAPS WAR DAYS. THE END OF THE ISSUE TAKES US TO THE MODERN DAY WITH TONY STARK IN THE ALPS WITH SOME FELLOW IMPLOYEES, AND THAT IS THE END OF THE FIRST ISSUE. A GREAT FIRST ISSUE TO A GREAT SERIES. SO I DEFINETLY RECOMMEND THIS ISSUE. ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. THE ULTIMATES ROCK!!!
