    Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

    June 23, 2009

    by Roger Ebert

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is a horrible experience of unbearable length, briefly punctuated by three or four amusing moments. One of these involves a dog-like robot humping the leg of the heroine. Such are the meager joys. If you want to save yourself the ticket price, go into the kitchen, cue up a male choir singing the music of hell, and get a kid to start banging pots and pans together. Then close your eyes and use your imagination.

The plot is incomprehensible. The dialog of the Autobots, Deceptibots and Otherbots is meaningless word flap. Their accents are Brooklyese, British and hip-hop, as befits a race from the distant stars. Their appearance looks like junkyard throw-up. They are dumb as a rock. They share the film with human characters who are much more interesting, and that is very faint praise indeed.

The movie has been signed by Michael Bay. This is the same man who directed "The Rock" in 1996. Now he has made "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." Faust made a better deal. This isn't a film so much as a toy tie-in. Children holding a Transformer toy in their hand can invest it with wonder and magic, imagining it doing brave deeds and remaining always their friend. I knew a little boy once who lost his blue toy truck at the movies, and cried as if his heart would break. Such a child might regard "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" with fear and dismay.

The human actors are in a witless sitcom part of the time, and lot of the rest of their time is spent running in slo-mo away from explosions, although--hello!--you can't outrun an explosion. They also make speeches like this one by John Turturro: "Oh, no! The machine is buried in the pyramid! If they turn it on, it will destroy the sun! Not on my watch!" The humans, including lots of U.S. troops, shoot at the Transformers a lot, although never in the history of science fiction has an alien been harmed by gunfire.

There are many great-looking babes in the film, who are made up to a flawless perfection and look just like real women, if you are a junior fanboy whose experience of the gender is limited to lad magazines. The two most inexplicable characters are Ron and Judy Witwicky (Kevin Dunn and Julie White), who are the parents of Shia LaBeouf, who Mephistopheles threw in to sweeten the deal. They take their son away to Princeton, apparently a party school, where Judy eats some pot and goes berserk. Later they swoop down out of the sky on Egypt, for reasons the movie doesn't make crystal clear, so they also can run in slo-mo from explosions.

The battle scenes are bewildering. A Bot makes no visual sense anyway, but two or three tangled up together create an incomprehensible confusion. I find it amusing that creatures that can unfold out of a Camaro and stand four stories high do most of their fighting with...fists. Like I say, dumber than a box of staples. They have tiny little heads, except for Starscream®, who is so ancient he has an aluminum beard.

Aware that this movie opened in England seven hours before Chicago time and the morning papers would be on the streets, after writing the above I looked up the first reviews as a reality check. I was reassured: "Like watching paint dry while getting hit over the head with a frying pan!" (Bradshaw, Guardian); "Sums up everything that is most tedious, crass and despicable about modern Hollywood!" (Tookey, Daily Mail); "A giant, lumbering idiot of a movie!" (Edwards, Daily Mirror). The first American review, however, reported that it "feels destined to be the biggest movie of all time" (Todd Gilchrist, Cinematical). It’s certainly the biggest something of all time.

I have to give Ebert some credit here, he generally has a better idea of what a good movie is when compared to a 12 year old too overly excited for 'splosions and Megan Fox's boobies.

The first movie was very disappointing and sequels are rarely better than the original.

If the first one exceeded your expectations then I am forced to ask: Did you walk into the theater expecting to see "Manos: Hands of Fate" or some other equally horrible abortion of a movie?

no, ive never even heard of that movie before. I expected them to be less realistic ( yea i know how realistic can a 40ft car changing robot be) but it was just a good movie in my opinion. it did have some dumb stuff, but i walked in expecting to be disappointed basically

@Satyrquaze: I'm from Chicago, and I grew up with Ebert (not literally, but he was always on television and doing reviews in the paper), and I have the utmost respect for him. One of my favorite books is Your Movie Sucks, which is nothing more than a collection of reviews for films he hated. As for Transformers 2, I was never excited and expect the outcome to be the same as the first film.

    Inane story
    Slow pan on Megan Fox
    Problem/Battle Autobots lose
    Confusing/Stupid backstory
    Slow pan on Megan Fox
    Filler
    Another battle Autobots lose
    More Filler
Final Battle (This is where I take the nap)

HOWEVER, I'm going to see the hell out of this movie for the simple fact that I work my butt off during the week and don't mind turning the brain off to watch stuff explode.

Which is perfectly fine and understandable. As long as no one expects this to win any important Oscars or anything. As far as I'm concerned, Michael Bay should die in a fire for making the first one.

I expect Razzies and nothing more. I don't think he should die for making the film. I never really thought a Transformers film would translate well in the first place, just like GI Joe or any other 80s cartoon.

    @DEGRAAF:

I don't expect realism out of a movie in this genre. I expect to feel nostalgia for a set of toys I loved to play with and a animated series I grew up watching religiously. I expect a movie remake based on that nostalgia to somewhat resemble the original product. I expect the characters I loved as a child to not be written in such a way as they insult my intelligence now that I'm an adult, and make me question what I enjoyed in my youth.

I expect a live-action movie made in 2007 to be better written and better acted than an animated movie on made in 1984... sadly this isn't the case.

Yeah, I really wasn't expecting this movie to get very positive reviews, but I'm sure I'll rent it when it comes out on DVD anyways, cause I watch damn near every movie that comes out. I was expecting it to be at least a little bit better than the first, though. Guess not.

It hurts my brain when kids at my high school say that the first Bay Transformers movie was the best film ever. It makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

Transformers films are just gigantic summer blockbuster movies, but made on the foundation of a toy franchise and with pretty looking cars.  They're just fun, they're not meant to be cinematic art-house masterpieces... As long as you're just expecting a big, fun blockbuster, then you wont be disappointed :)

@inferiorego: True, but this isn't Independence Day or Pearl Harbour.  Basically, if you liked the first one then you'll like the new one.  If you didn't care for the first one, then don't waste your money on this one.  But I still think it makes a great blockbuster movie in the traditional sense.  It also has swearing in to amuse kids, and Baywatch style slow-motion sequences of Megan Fox running at the camera to keep the men happy...

People who think that just because a movie's existence means quality sure won't want to read the Transformers 2 review in most outlets.  Critics have not been giving a favorable Transformers 2 review.  The film has been pilloried in the press as having a labyrinthine plot that is ultimately lacking depth, and it received a 20% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, the film review site, and it appears a fast payday loan isn't going to reverse the tide.  Director Michael Bay is frequently lambasted by critics as a hack that relies on effects rather than plot, and the Transformers 2 review stream seems to reflect this view, but it likely won't stop people from getting fast cash to watch it.

It was a Michael Bay movie, starring Shia LaBeouf. Ebert reviews this like he expected it to be good or something. I'll never understand movie critics. If you weren't expecting this:

I don't know what to tell you. Michael Bay is not in the business of making good movies. He makes action movies. Is he the guy who directed The Rock? Yes. He is also the man who directed Pearl Harbor. Stupid side-plots and love triangles are the only thing he knows apart from explosions.
I also find Ebert's claim that gunfire has never harmed an alien in the history of sci-fi to be completely spurious hyperbole that ultimately detracts from the review as a whole. I find it hard to take Ebert seriously when he writes stuff like this. Yeah, you can't outrun explosions, but remember: aliens can't be harmed by gunfire! The man is too jaded at this point in his career to even make sense of his own writing. He even admits to checking with other critics before releasing this review. Transformers is breaking box office records, and that's all that really matters to anyone involved in the movie. Obviously people like the movie. Ebert needs to realize that he had a niche audience to begin with, and he is becoming rapidly more and more obsolete. Maybe he does realize this, and that's why he wrote this review. If so, well played, Ebert...

i htink he makes some really good movies. The only a few issues i had with Transformers 2 was

i disliked the twins, they were pretty dumb and should have been cutt out of the movie.

I disliked the old black bird using a cane, just thikn that they shouldnt get old like that. Out dated for sure but not old and lastly

if the fallen is a prime and can only be defeated by a prime, shouldnt that mean that Optimus Prime should only be able to be defeated by a prime as well?

in all they tried to put to much humor in to the movie. Ive they cut out 80% of the humor they tried for it would have been much better
