Brief History

The Flying Squad, known colloquially as the Sweeney, are part of the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime Directorate, charged with investigating and preventing armed robberies and other serious crimes. During the 1970s their members included Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter, two hard-drinking, hard-fighting officers willing to bend the rules to catch the bad guys, but who nevertheless always remained on the side of the angels.

Notes

The Sweeney TV show was a fictional account of officers working in the real life Flying Squad, and unlike earlier TV shows didn't paint its heroes as whiter-than-white. Having started as a on-off play on Armchair Theatre in 1974, the ongoing series began in January 1975 and ran for four years, during which time it spawned several novels and three annuals which included comic strip adventures for the squad.
