Steve Austin served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. After Vietnam he was sent to NASA to be one of 12 men to walk on the moon. Austin then becomes a test pilot in a new aircraft when it malfunctions Edit
The aircraft (an M2-F2) malfunctions causing a crash, which severly injures Austin taking away one Arm; both legs; one eye and severe head damage.
Austin's best friend Dr. Rudy Wells is a Doctor and Scientist who has long looked for a way to reduce agent casualties in the OSI (Office of Scientific Intellegence) which becomes Austin's new workplace when he is rebuilt as a cyborg.
Austin has been known to be quite cold hearted, in the books he actually kills people when necessary, however in the TV series pilot, he does not kill. His superior officer Oscar Goldman who is the TV series was replaced by Oliver Spencer. The literary relationship between Goldman and Austin was much less freindlier than the TV version's relationship.
The Six Million Dollar Man gave birth to one of the most known television quotes in history " Steve Austin, astronaut. A man barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster "
