The Sith is a group of wielders of the Darkside of the Force in the Star Wars universe. They are often seen as Dark Jedi, and some were once great heroes, but their lust for power took control.
A brief discussion between Count Dooku and Quinlan Vos on the nature of the Sith after Dooku discovered the holocron of Darth Andeddu
Dooku-"A dark jedi is nothing compared to the power of the sith. Since the Sith war there have ever been only two. Do you know why Quinlan Vos?"
Vos-"Because Sith kill each other. It's all about power. One master, one apprentice, until death changes the equation."
The Code of the Sith
The Sith, like all groups, must also have a code to live by, this is the Code of the Sith:
*Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.*
Early History
In the early days of the Old Republic, the Jedi and Sith stood side by side, their different views of the force led to a civil war, The Jedi believed wielders of the force should serve as protectors of the Republic while the Sith believed wielders of the Force should control it, this war was one that the Sith lost. Surviving Sith fled to the outer rim and conquered a primitive world, inter-breeding with it's people and forming The Sith Empire. This would exist in secret until Republic spacers discovered the Sith's new homeworld, and their plans to wage war against the Old Republic, for a thousand years the Republic had to deal with the Sith until they were seemingly defeated at the end of the Sith Wars.
Secret Existence
Sith lived and trained in secret, passing on knowledge of the darkside to a chosen few, waiting for an oppurtunity to step out of the shadows. Darth Plagueis found a promising student in Palpatine, a young man strong in the force and full of hatred. Plagueis harnessed this young man's abilities far too well, and was betrayed and murdered by Palpatine.
Darth Sidious and the return of the Sith
Palpatine took the name Darth Sidious, and found an apprentice, a Zabruk child with a tragic past who would become Darth Maul. Together the two Sith Lords engineered events that would lead to Palpatine becoming the Chancellor of the Republic, Maul would lose his life in the process to Obi-Wan Kenobi, but not before taking the life of Kenobi's master, Qui Gon Jinn.The Jedi are now aware that the Sith have returned.
