The Shield
The Shield is a comic book character that first appeared in Pep Comics #1The Shield is a man who wears a power suit.
The Shield made his first appearance in January of 1940 (This makes him the first super hero to wear the American Flag on his costume).
The first Shield was named Joe Higgins. His father was killed while working on a chemical formula that would give the ability of super strength. Joe completes his father's work and uses the chemical solution to give himself super strength and invulnerability. Now gifted with these powers, he fights the threats of America as a FBI agent known only as Chief J. Edgar Hoover (the real name of the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation).
He gains a kid partner named Dusty Simmons. Dusty's father was killed by foreign agents.
When the Shield died, his son took over.
On the June of 1959, Archie comics Brought back the Shield. however the new Shield had no connection to the original shield. The new Shield's name was Lancelot Strong. His father experimented on him at a young age and he would find out later about his background and powers. His father had been killed by foreign agents when he was younger. He was adopted by a family on a farm. He joined the army and played both the role of a private and the Shield.
Bill Higgins, who is the son of Joe Higgins, first appeared in Fly Man issue #31. He had all the same powers that his father had. He would also founded Mighty Crusaders.

Joe Higgins, the son of scientist Tom Higgins, whose research had included a quest for a chemical to give super-powers to ordinary humans. With success within his grasp, the elder Higgins was killed by foreign agents. The son, a R.C.M.P., used the process on himself, then made put together a skin-tight outfit based on the Canadian flag to become Mountie Extraordinary, the Shield. (note: During World War II Canada used the Union Jack)
History:
For all intents and purposes the Canadian Shield was the same as his US counterpart, the stories were the same but redrawn by Canadian artists who adjusted the costume for the Canadian audience.

It all began during World War Two, when freedom loving patriots everywhere longed for a noble and true hero to lead it out of its darkest days. In a top secret military base a young G-man and scientist, Joe Higgins was chosen to participate in Project Shield. Joe was given an extraordinary suit. It was bullet proof and fire proof. It was also treated with an experimental alloy, that allowed the already athletic Higgins perform amazing feats of strength. The Shield was faithful to his duty. An in the line of duty, one fateful night, his luck ran out, as arch-villain, the Eraser, took him by surprise, His ray debilitated and successfully ended the Shield's career.
The Shield's son, Joe Higgins, Jr. combined his fathers anatomical formula with a catalytic agent and expanded upon the powers of his father's uniform to carry on the legacy of Democracy's greatest champion.
