Still in the Shadows, but out of the Darkness

    THE GOOD

The art and writing are exactly what I have come to expect from this team - excellent. I love the subtlety used to reveal the Shade's ability to quickly transport himself throughout the world - a little back story, and then a simple comment in passing, "...before I'd mastered my ability to 'step' through the shadows...". There was no need for further explanation, simple story telling to reveal an amazing ability.

For me, the story was meant to reveal two main points: 1) the Shade's stubbornness; 2) and his need to overcome it to reach beyond the shadows that keep him safe. The setting couldn't be better: Australia - a place with inherent mystical/religious undertones and somewhere far enough away from his "normal" life to give him a chance to break through his "walls". Even his journey to get the information he seeks goes from "normal" (for him) to requiring him to step out from his comfort zone.

Granted, I am probably over thinking this - I can just imagine James chuckling at my take on his story... But this book, and its symbolism really hit home for me. :) I guess that is the ultimate goal of any form of entertainment. That is why I am giving it a 5/5.

    THE BAD

    Nothing.

I have to say though, before I had my realization of the symbolism entrenched within the story, I was disappointed that there wasn't more to the battle in Alice. After my realization, it was just right.

    THE VERDICT

Highly Recommended. Both for its story and the fact that it is part of the larger arc(s) in this series. This issue is all about learning and letting go. The Shade has been around a LONG time. He has built up a lot of automated defenses that keep him safe, but like any "wall", they also keep him from growing past his weaknesses. In this issue we see the Shade breaking down these barriers - physically, mentally and emotionally. The symbolism is fantastic. The non-variant cover captures it wonderfully. In the end, with his defenses down, he is able to gain access to what he seeks, which just opens up another mysterious door for the reader. This is a great addition to the series. I cannot wait for the next issue!
