The Sensational She-Hulk Vol. 1
is a comic volume from Marvel Publishing that started in 1989This one was one for the record books. In the late 80's, early 90's, Marvel had a break through in new ideas. Ghost Rider was being printed on all black pages, the junior team, the New Warriors were at bat, and She-Hulk was making us laugh. Not in the conventional "What The" (a series back in the 70's) way, but in a parody of Marvel and the comic book industry. Before this book, She-Hulk was a secondary character. Medium to weak story lines, characters that many had not heard of (raise your hands if you remember the Blue Shield), and a plot that just didn't go anywhere. She suffered much as Supergirl had suffered in the shadow of her big cousin.
Then something weird happened, John Byrne took the book. The same writer/artist who had put the She-Hulk on the Fantastic Four and developed her from a 2-d character to a very well rounded and lovable hero. The title followed at first the Fantastic Four pattern. Alien invasion in issue 2, classic golden age hero in issue 4 (Blonde Phantom anyone), and the villainous Doctor was in in issue 5 (Dr. Bong, not Doom though).
The rules were thrown out the window, She-Hulk was jumping pages, tearing holes in the paper of the page to escape, and yelling at the writer often. A very well written, well in parts, series which was a stand alone series. Stand alone as in not part of the dozen or so cross overs with a X-men or Spiderman title. Remember the good years of the X-Men when they were funny? Well sort of like that with more laughs.
