Wonderful
'The Borrowers' series has been adapted to the screen (large and small) several times before, but never very successfully. But Hiromasa Yonebayashi (better known as 'Maro'), a rising star at Studio Ghibli, and the probable successor to Hayao Miyazaki, has done what none of the others could.
The Secret World of Arrietty is an animated film that has all the wonderment of the great children's fantasy tales like The Wizard of Oz and E.T. combined with the open-ended realism of independent film. It tells the story of Sho, a boy with a heart condition who is sent to the country to rest before a heart operation with a dim prognosis, who befriends a tiny girl named Arrietty, one of a race of 'Borrowers', tiny people that live beneath the floor of the house. But Sho isn't the only one that has discovered the Borrowers, and their friendship seems destined to be short-lived, no matter what Sho's prognosis.
It also seems that after 50 years, the frequency of quality dubbing is finally becoming more regular. At least the UK English dub of this film is quite well done, and I suspect it has laid the groundwork for the US English version to follow.
The Secret World of Arrietty ranks right up there with Spirited Away as a modern classic for all ages.
