Fooj!
Dominic struggles to grasp the finer points of modern warfare as his father faces his own struggle against time.
The Good
This cover is absolutely amazing!!! The way it mirrors the artwork of a Myan temple's interior inscriptions is extremely fitting.
I like the interaction between Val and Dom in this issue. I got a sense of these two truly being childhood friends that are as close as brothers. Their moment towards the end of the issue really has some interesting dialog.
Hickman/Pitarra/Rosenberg make a great team. This book looks absolutely amazing! You can see Hickman's artistic influence on Pitarra as a few of his trademark design favorites pop up throughout this issue. They're most prevalent during the parts where we see Robert's relationship develop.
Dom's an easy protagonist to relate too, it's as if Hickman knew his take on the nature of time would cause a few head scratches having him be as out of the loop as I am may not've been intentional but it certainly works.
Last page has an awesome reveal!
The Bad
I'm still more interested and drawn to the concepts underlying the story than the characters themselves.
While I liked the reveal on the last page it does make me a lil' worried that this story might get a bit preachy.
The Verdict
The second issue of Redwing makes some strides toward establishing the main characters and grounding the narrative, but as of now I'm still more intrigued and invested in unraveling the ideology than individuals. The story remains engaging on multiple levels however. Pitarra and Rosenberg turn in some amazing work on the art end and Hickman's writing is technically flawless. Hopefully some more heart will shine through within the series next two issues. I'm ruling this one a buy.
