It looks like we are back to a four issue mini-series (if you remember the last issue was branded with: "2 of 6") - this is a shame, because I am really enjoying this book and believe more issues would better suit the story. Be that as it may, this issue was still solid and offers up a great plot transition to the final battle and last issue in the mini.

The action picks up where it left off last issue, Lucien attempting to rescue Chanti from one of the invading alien Isopods. The action quickly turns to drama as Lucien has to deal with things he cannot conquer with his super-power - Chanti's parents. Then, if you thought things couldn't get any worse, in walks the Ray's (unbeknownst to him) greatest nemesis...

With trouble piling up faster than the speed of light, Lucien definitely has some catching up to do in order to be prepared for the third act of this production.

    Story: 4.0 / 5.0

I have thought this to be a great mini-series from the start. The first issue did wonders for introducing the character, his origin and his abilities. The entire series has felt like a great, albeit cheesy 50's sci-fi/horror film... which I believe is its intention. I am disappointed in the fact that there was a chance that it may last longer than four issues, but that is just a comic fan's greed getting in the way with production schedules, plans, etc. Whether it was a misprint or not, the pacing of the book has been solid from the beginning. Nothing feels overly forced or rushed. I think publishing a mini-series is a great way to debut a new character into the universe - the fans get (usually) a great story while the publishers and creative teams can "test the waters", so to speak. I am not sure if Lucien Gates, as "The Ray" will return after this series, but it would be great to see him in another mini-series or possibly included in one of the many team books? Either way, I am definitely looking forward to the next issue and the conclusion of this mini-series story arc.

    Cover Art: 4.5 / 5.0

The cover art for this issue is great. While it doesn't necessarily depict an occurrence within the book, it does accurately depict the mood and associated plot within the issue and the story as a whole. It also provides a great feel of the standard cheesy 50's sci-fi/horror movie poster, cool title included! - "Can He Rescue His Love...From Evil's Monstrous Grip!"

    Art: 4.5 / 5.0

The art is really well done in this issue, as it has been for the entire mini-series. It is great when a book can have consistent artists throughout the series. It is really detailed, wonderfully colored and the facial expressions are captured perfectly. In fact, out of everything, the most memorable illustrations are those of the facial expressions for each of the characters, in each of their different situations.

    Overall: 4.0 / 5.0

The great writing and beautiful art come together wonderfully to form a solid issue (not a filler) in this "feels too short" mini-series. While I would loved to have it last another two issues beyond its current size, I am sure the creative team will bring a satisfying ending to this exciting, action packed and drama filled book. If anyone from DC is taking notes, I believe this will make a great trade and will likely do well as a collection.

I like this new version of The Ray and the way he is being written; his characterization is not being dragged forever. I am still uneasy by the fact that there are no connections to the rest of the DCU, which could potentially mean it takes place outside of it. I also like Jamal Igle's pencils. Please check my mini-review here:http://bit.ly/yogKF4Comments and feedback are always welcome!...
