    "The gathering of Rapture"

The television evangelist Reverend Skagg believed an Angel of the Lord had told him to kill twelve hundreds of his most dedicated followers in bizarre ways. After all, hadn't God told Abraham to kill Isaac? But no one opposed this test of faith. The followers were each uniquely tortured to death by a professional interrogator named Dr. Emilio Pasqualia. Six rose from their deathbed with unusual powers, and they took new names based on the Bible verses that best matched their powers.

What Skagg did not know was that this was no act of God... the "angel" was actually the malevolent Shapeshifter, who wanted the Rapture to destroy her enemies, The Elementals. The torture of Skagg's followers had served to attract the rogue magical power of the Shadowspear, a powerful magical spell set into motion by Lord Saker, and the exposure of so many dying souls had caused the Shadowspear to imbue some with magic, causing them to return to life.

When Skagg discovered the true nature of his "angel", he nearly went mad, and the members of the Rapture refused to believe it at all, rejecting Skagg's story of a false angel.
