Reflection of the life of Harvey Pekar

I'll be honest, I never read much from him before he pasted.  The American Splendor series is one of those series I kept telling myself I would get to.  I still plan to read it all.

How I stumbled upon Harvey was at a fan appreciation convention in Toronto.  I was doing my thing and getting books signed and I stopped to speak to Ty Templeton.  He signed my Bigg Time and we were just talking about works he did. He mentioned how he loved working with people in comics since there were so many great guys.  Harvey was one of them, Ty Templeton work on some of the Vertigo run of American Splendor and said he loved how honest and down to earth Mr. Pekar was.

Before I decided to invest in the American Splendor series, I tried The Quitter.  [It was recommended to me at The Beguiling, store in the Annex area of Toronto. For those of you who read and enjoy Scott Pilgrim, the shop I speak of is less then a block away from Lee's Place.]  This was the best place for me to start.  Thank you guys at The Beguiling.

This is a story of Harvey's youth.  Before his American Splendor series.  It really was a nice introduction to Harvey's narration style.  I enjoyed the story and the dialogue as much as the art form Dean Haspiel (Grey shade coloring by Lee Loughridge).

This story speaks to us all.  Those who try and fail, but wake up again to fail again.  It is a funny tale and well written.  This is the everyman story which will hook you as Pekar fan if you were not one already.

    Rest in Peace.
