This first issue in the Puma Blues volume begins the set-up, with nominal story detail, of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife research biologist hired by the U.S. Military to conduct video surveillance and tracking of animals that have been recently mutated following the explosion of a nuclear device in New York 5 years prior to the setting of the story ( which takes place in 1997).
He essentially lives alone in the woods of Massachusetts
, with minimal contact with humans via video communications, including a family member, the US Military, and the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, the latter two who give him instructions for his tasks. He is also kept up to date with world news via teletype and video.
Creatures such as flying manta rays appear over the skies of the forest, problems arise around the world involving the Soviets and their space efforts now that the U.S. is struggling to survive its nuclear holocaust.
