Plot Summary
The New Mutants were fighting in Madripoor. They had arrived at a rendezvous point, but were attacked. Cable knew they had been set up. The others wanted Rictor to use his powers, but because his powers had geometrically increased he didn't dare to use them in an area that was prone to earthquakes. Suddenly, Sunfire appeared and used his fire powers to chase the hired thugs away. He was the one who the New Mutants had been told to meet, but the group who had attacked them werent aware of Sunfire's involvement and therefore ran away. Cable was concerned that their true enemy was now aware of all of their abilities, but Sunfire suggested that they move to Hightown.
General Nguyen conferred with Stryfe via video transmission. The General was angry that Stryfe had brought dangerous mutants to Madripoor. However, Stryfe was pleased that he had information on all of the New Mutants. As such, he was planning on sending three Japanese mutant assassins from the Mutant Liberation Front to dispose of them. General Nguyen didn't want Dragoness, Kamikaze or Sumo to be involved, but Stryfe re-assured him that the destruction of Cable & the New Mutants would be beneficial to them all.
The New Mutants flew across town following Sunfire. Cannonball considered how Sunfire's attitude was sneering, even when he and Cable exchanged formal pleasantries. When they landed, Sunfire explained that a new drug called Sleet had been introduced to the water supply of a small Japanese moutain village with deadly results; the villagers grew murderous and killed each other in a rampage of violence. Sunfire had been sent to Madripoor by the Japanese government to investigate Sleet. Cable had traced the Mutant Liberation Front to the same area. So they decided to work together towards a similar goal. Cable had portable Cerebro units that had registered the presence of mutants near the wharf, but was unable to identify the mutant signatures. Therefore he split the team into two.
Sunspot didn't like the team being split into two. Cable admitted that he didn't either, but teams of land and air would be more effective. Wolfsbane had disabled several guards and deduced that from the sheer number of guards that they must be guarding something important.
Meanwhile, Sunfire led Cannonball and Warlock through the air towards the docks. Boom-Boom rode on Warlock's back and was thrilled to be part of the aerial team. Warlock believed it was because Cable tactically reasoned that he powers would be more beneficial from the air, while Cannonball teased her that it meant she was too noisy for the ground team.
Back on the ground, Sunspot was concerned that Rictor's problems with Cable might cause trouble for them during their mission. Rictor still had trouble reconciling the memory of Cable from his childhood to the man who was leading their team, but he reassured Sunspot that they were a team no matter what. Sunspot couldn't understand why Wolfsbane was attracted to someone as brooding ans secretive as Rictor. She snarled at Sunspot that Rictor was a caring person. Sunspot backed off, surprised by her passion. However he considered how disastrous their relationship could be.
In the air, Boom-Boom enjoyed the aerial reconnaissance, but Cannonball's Cerebro unit registered mutants below. Immediately they came under attack from Dragoness, Kamikaze & Sumo. Kamikaze detonated when he impacted with Warlock. Boom-Boom fell until Cannonball caught her. Sumo then landed on top of Warlock, pinning him painfully to the floor, until Boom-Boom's time-bomb hit Sumo and forced him away. Sunfire's fire powers seemed to be equalled by Dragoness'. He was attracted to her, but could not understand why a powerful & beautiful Japanese girl would wish to hurt their motherland. Cannonball then commanded Warlock to disable Kamikaze, which he did by wrapping kamikaze up. However, just as they begun to consider what to do with him, the were hit by a mysterious force. Falling onto the ground, Cannonball looked up to see Stryfe arriving through one of Zero's teleportation portals. Cannonball realised that Stryfe had the drug. Stryfe admitted that he was a little 'mad', but he didn't care for the lives of human children. He had enough Sleet to pour into the water supply of every major city on the planet. Lifting Cannonball off the ground, Stryfe removed the Cerebro unit from Cannonball's wrist and destroyed it.
Nearby, Wolfsbane's Cerebro registered the disappearance of Cannonball's Cerebro. Cable considered how they may have been taken captive by Stryfe. However, he trusted Cannonball's team to free themselves and cause trouble for Stryfe. Cable then ordered Wolfsbane to change into a wolf and commanded them to be quiet while a stranger ran between the cargo on the docks. Sunspot considered how much he respected Cable, because unlike professor Xavier or Magneto, Cable actually listened to what he had to say. Cable then leapt down from their vantage point to confront the running stranger. Cable landed the first punch. The other man fell back and popped out claws from his hand.
Wolverine stood back with his claws bared. He was prepared to fight back. Sunspot was shocked to see the X-Men in Madripoor and called for both him and Cable to stop fighting. However, Cable & Wolverine recognised each other and began to fight.
