New Avengers #15 - Fear Itself, part 2

5

Is there anyone that doesn't like Squirrel Girl? If so, after reading this issue, it would be very hard not to have gained respect for her. You get fighting, humor and some Fear Itself crossover action. What else could you ask for?

This is the moment Squirrel Girl has been waiting for. Watch as she takes the center stage to show us what she's capable of. Hopefully she'll survive.

The Good

Brian Bendis and Mike Deodato on New Avengers is a winning combination. The cover might make you question how the issue will stack up as a regular issue and as a Fear Itself crossover. Squirrel Girl is one of those wacky characters that has been written to do some crazy things (I'd assume most remember when she took on Dr. Doom). She might have been a strange choice for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' nanny but this is where she shows whether or not she's worth what they're paying her.

Because this is a Bendis comic, you might normally expect some an issue with lots of witty and humorous dialogue with some possible epic action scenes. Of course, that's what you get. Before the major action begins, we see a little New Avengers downtime as a couple members are sparring out in the yard. Obviously I do not want to spoil anything but I have to mention that Squirrel Girl is forced to spar and it's something you'll want to see. If that and what she goes through later doesn't raise the level of respect you have for her...I don't know what else to tell you. It was all around a fun comic.

Of course Mike Deodato continues his amazingly detailed artwork. Who would've thought Squirrel Girl could look so...good? And he also shows whether or not he is capable of drawing actual squirrels. We are treated to some calm scenes along with some insane action that really shows the range Deodato has.

The Bad

There really isn't anything wrong with this issue. Does it really have much to do with Fear Itself? Not really. The battle is from the pages of the main series but it's really more of an excuse to see some butt-kicking action. That is totally fine with me.

The Verdict

Some of the Fear Itself crossovers have been hit or miss. This one might not have a huge impact with the main series but there's no reason to complain about that. Bendis gives us his usual shining moments of the characters actually being human. This means we get scenes of the team getting to hang out along with the humor Bendis is known for writing. Deodato of course manages to wow us with his incredible art, depicting both the calmer scenes along with the intense action the crossover calls for. Of course he makes Squirrel Girl look pretty amazing. And that's where the issue really shines. We get to see Squirrel Girl in action. If you haven't been able to appreciate her for the fighting skills she possesses, this issue is sure to convince you of how formidable she is. I didn't think I'd give a Squirrel Girl comic a five out of five but I had no choice. The comic was fun and entertained me and that's exactly what I want in a comic.
