The New Avengers # 39 - Echo
is a comic book published by Marvel Publishing & released on 5 / / 2008Plot Summary
Overview
The Secret Invasion is here! Award-winning artist David Mack brings his amazing talent to NEW AVENGERS to illustrate a major story in the life of Echo! Have the Skrulls infiltrated the Avengers? Is Maya Lopez the only one with proof? Will she live to tell the tale? All this and a major Avengers hook up!
Maya wakes up and gets dressed. She runs into Wolverine in the kitchen. He tells here he knows what she's thinking. He tells her he's not a Skrull. He says that he didn't mention their past in front of others because he's a gentleman. Maya says that maybe their all making more of this Skrull thing than it actually is. Wolverine insists they are invading. He also tells her she's the reason he joined back up with the Avengers after Cap was killed. He didn't want to leave her to fend for herself in Japan. Maya tells him not to hit on her but Logan says she'll be hitting on him. Maya tells him she's going out.
Echo goes by the offices of Nelson, Murdock and Blake. She soon finds Daredevil on a nearby rooftop. They begin talking and she tells him she needed to know why he sent Captain America after her. Daredevil stumbles by saying he's dead. He catches himself and says she must have meant before. She asks him who he really is.
This Daredevil turns out to be a Skrull and changes into her. Echo prepares to make a move and the Skrull shoots optic blasts at her. The Skrull says he's been studying her and she should just let this happen. The Skrull also has fire powers and easily melts her sword.
Wolverine comes to Maya's rescue. As he slashes away at the Skrull, it blasts Wolverine away. It tells Maya that she doesn't even know what she's fighting for and they are trained to die. The Skrull teleports away in a 'Bamf.'
Wolverine is trying to heal from the blast and can't get Maya's attention to warn her. The Skrull teleports behind her and grabs hold of her by the neck. They continue to fight and Wolverine manages to get to his feet to join in too. The Skrull teleports again then takes off in a flame.
Maya sees to Logan. He tells her that he followed her because if he was a Skrull, he'd try to replace her since she has little history with the rest of the team.
Later Maya is meditating. Clint comes over with some coffee. He tells her that after their fight with the Hood, he wanted to kiss her. She says she knows. Clint asks her if she would've minded. Maya says no. they begin kissing and end up in bed.

This is a great lead in to SECRET INVASION
I really enjoyed the verbal interrogation between Echo and Wolverine well played and one of the best depictions of Logan.
all and all defiantly worth a read.
I hope all lead ins continue to build momentum like this one did. does anyone else think Clint is a Skrull. wets the appetite for the main event.
I liked dare devil being a Skrull (hey does that mean Ben Afleck
is a Skrull that would explain a lot) but that wasn't earth shattering like finding out Dum Dum was over in prequel.
my only complaint about the issue is the same thing that made it great the momentum it seemed end so quickly. It left me wanting more. good start.

When I read that David Mack was drawing this issue, I was well prepared for his freaky and very pleasing expressionistic work. Boy, was I surprised when he drew this 'straight', so to speak. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't disappointed - even when drawing in traditional comic book mode, he's still one of the best in the business and I loved the bookends of this issue composed of Maya taking her hand away from her face (on page one) and covering it up again (on the last page).
Talking of Maya, thank goodness in this issue they've remembered she's deaf! I kept rolling my eyes at panels of Spidey or Ronin talking to her in previous issues (with their mouths covered up by their costumes) and then Maya replying. Hello, folks, how exactly is she lipreading?
I liked the fact that Bendis is upping a bit of sexual tension between Wolvie and Echo and then suddenly this dissipates when we realise that Maya's actually after Clint. How all this is going to play out (SPOILER ALERT) now it's been revealed in Secret Invasion 2 that Mockingbird is back on the scene.
Good read with terrific artwork.

Last month, New Avengers had the Secret Invasion cover tag on it. Excited and giddy as hell (yeah guys can get giddy too), I picked up it up and read it. Well, it was great story and all, but come on! It didn't deserve the tag on it! Well this week as I was picking up my comics I again saw the New Avengers complete with it's little Secret Invasion tag. I thought to myself, "Eh It's probably not gonna have anything to do with the damn Skrulls, but what the hell, it's got Wolverine." So I picked it up.
After reading this comic I thought not once, but twice of slapping myself upside the head. This book has everything to do with the Secret Invasion, some juicy Skrull-laden content in here. First off, I didn't expect Daredevil to be a Skrull, not because "oh he's so great" but because of the fact that he is kinda detached from the rest of the marvel universe (this means Thor and Captain America are also fair game).
Also, reading this, I don't know, but I got the feeling that Clint's sudden interest in Echo can be evidence that he's a Skrull, because everybody knows the best way to gains someone's trust is by shoving your tongue down their throat right? No seriosuly, I really do tihnk Clint, Hawkeye, Ronin, whatever you wanna call him is the Skrull assigned to infiltrate the Secret Avengers team. I can't wait to see Wolverine kick his ass. Another great thing in this book that is NOT directly related to the Secret Invasion is Wolverine's and Echo's dialogue. It's nice to see that the writers stayed true to Wolverine's attitude. I like the fact that he is sternly interrogating Maya but still has a kinda flirty attitude towards her. I don't know if you'll agree with me on that. I just think that when Wolverine finds out that Clint Barton is a Skrull (if he really is a Skrull. Let's not jump to conclusions.) he's gonna cut off his left arm, and when he finds out that he kissed Maya, he'll cut of his right arm...and then...I guess Wolverine will savor really cutting his Skrull body into little pieces. GO SECRET INVASION!

In this issue Echo is having problems finding her place in the New Avengers, and after she talks to Wolverine, she goes out where she is accosted by a Skrull who wants to replace her. The book is worth it if you can find it discounted.
