Mighty Avengers Assemble!
The theme for this week (and last week) seems to be endings. Endings to books, creative team runs, arcs, storylines, and that's the case for "Mighty Avengers" #36. Ever since the end of "Secret Invasion," Dan Slott's group of C-List Avengers has been my favorite of the Avengers titles, and it's sad to see it go. On that bittersweet note...
THE GOOD:
- Where else can I start but Hank Pym? As I've been saying, Slott nails it with Pym. A Slott-penned monthly would be great for Pym. I'm hoping other writers don't lose this momentum that Slott started. Just a great interpretation of Pym.
- Janet Van Dyne was not brought back. They used the idea of underspace Dyne really well.
- I don't like Ultron, but I do understand why he had to be the villain. That idea works.
- The script is really well written. Good pacing to the story.
- Another Marvel monthly that gives you more hints at what'll happen in "Siege #4." I have been wondering who will be the "Fallen." This book presents an interesting candidate (don't think it'll be this character, but it now wouldn't surprise me).
THE BAD:
- It's not entirely bad, but reading "Thunderbolts" definitely fleshes out some of this book. It's not required, but there's some benefit to reading more about the Mighty mission.
- The art doesn't work. It's not detailed, the faces look weird, the shading looks weird, and it just looks a bit rushed.
- Ultron Pym. Could they stress that any more?
OVERALL:
If you've been following the book monthly then I feel like you'll enjoy the book. It's a good book-end to "Mighty Avengers" and what we've seen on the series during the Slott/Pym era. The art wasn't great, but Slott did a pretty good job with the script. In the end, Slott did a pretty good job on his entire run. The book exceeded my expectations on the whole and really did a good job at evolving some of these characters - especially Hank Pym.
