Bendis at it again
Now this is how the first issue of a team book is done. Most of the time, the first issue of a team book is kinda boring as all they do is pick the team... and that's usually it. Bendis avoids this as the issue opens up with the team already formed and on their first mission with flashbacks to Tony Stark and Carol Danvers picking out the team. Which is great because as we all know, one of Bendis' strong points is dialog.
I had my doubts about the team, but it all makes sense in the end. Something odd also... is Bendis uses thought bubbles in this issue. I don't remember the last time I saw thought bubbles in a Marvel comic book. I was thrown off at first, but it works well and are used to create some funny moments in the book.
One of my worries was also put to rest. I thought that having two Avengers books might be to much, and end up being a lot of the same... especially considering they both have the same writer. After reading the first issue I can honestly say I can't see that happening. The two teams are very different, and I it looks like most stories wouldn't work between the two teams. The Mighty Avengers feels like a traditional Avengers team especially with them fighting giant monsters in the first issue. It's not nearly as gritty as what we've seen so far in New Avengers, it feels more like old-school Avengers and that's great.
I only have two minor complaints about the book. I'm not a big fan of Bendis' characterization of The Sentry. It seems so different with what Paul Jenkins has done with the character. Nothing major happens in the book with the character for me to complain about though. The other is... why in God's name did Frank Cho decide to go with that look for Wonder Man? I wasn't a fan of the "jacket look"... EVER! Readers should start a petition to change this. Seriously! lol
The issue ends with a cliffhanger that shows some interesting stuff is on the horizon.
