Issue #5 is quite illuminating! Karic & Pilot have arrived at the Great Ash Tree through the use of questionable dark magicks by Pilot. Karic now believes himself to be a real Templar Mouse since Pilot knighted him as such in issue #4. Karic's entire belief system is turned upside down when the Readers of Wheat reveal all of Pilot's manipulations and treachery. Karic is broken hearted yet again. He is dealing with personal injury, his loved ones being captured and now his only friend and trusted mentor is revealed as a liar. You can't help feel terribly sorry for this little young mouse.
Meanwhile, the captured mice of Cricket Glen are hauled off in cages by the rats to the Shining City where the crazy mouse King Icarus rules with help of the rats and weasels, the enemies of all mice. Readers get the first look at the beautiful capital city rendered beautifully by Oeming. It's very much like Tolkien's White City under the rule of a corrupt and mind-controlled patron. Perhaps this is what Glass & Oeming were thinking. Their series is so easily compared to about a dozen other works of fiction and folklore. Star Wars fans in particular are rather drawn to Mice Templar because of corollaries among the personal relationships and the failing government bureacracy.
Once again, I'll caution parents -- this is not a series to be reading to your children. It is heavily violent and filled with some terrifying imagery of animals brutally attacking each other.
