This has been quite an odd mini-series. I had heard good things about Joe Casey and, encouraged by them, put this book on my pull list. Well, he certainly has a distinctive take on things but, frankly, whilst he is a fairly original writer, my head kinda hurt just trying to understand what exactly was going on in this series. On the plus side, Casey is not that interested in the battles that the Defenders face - he's more into the team dynamics and the bitching and griping going on behind the scenes. These parts of the six issue series work really well. However, there is also a four dimensional element with the nominal villian of the piece (and 'nominal' is the right word - Casey hs no real interest in there being a 'big bad'), Yandroth leaping back and forth in time to explain in a very post-modern way that the original Defenders aren't necessarily the definitive or best version of that team. There was a nice moment for me, in this issue, when it suddenly clicked that Casey's team represented the four elements - air, water, fire and earth. And that last sentence probably tells you as much as where this book is coming from than anything else I've written.
Again, anticipating ratings foul up, I give this book 2.5 out of 5, no matter what it says at the top of the review.
