    while The Joker's history hasn't been fully explored before he became The Joker, i don't believe he was a mobster of any great note before...

    The killing joke even has Joker say, "I remember my past in many ways. I prefer having a multiple choice history" Or something similar. But, not the Joker doesn't say "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moon light" and he isn't for sure a mobster. The two most commonly referred to pre-Jokers are the mobster and failed comedian.
