Over the weekend we heard the shocking news that the Avengers titles were coming to an end.  We can now start speculating as to what will come next in The Heroic Age.  My gut says we'll see a consolidation of the Avengers team (and maybe even a return of the different branches like West Coast, etc).  This makes sense as I'm sure no one in the Marvel Universe is really calling the teams "New," "Dark" or "Mighty."

The other question is what will happen to the Initiative program?  Marvel has revealed the solicit for the series finale (issue #35):

This is it: the series finale – and the end of the Initiative as we know it!  Learn the fate of your favorite heroes, villains...and those who aren't quite sure what they are, but who are going to have to decide in a hurry! Who will taste sweet victory? Who will know the agony of defeat? For some this is an end -- for others, a new beginning (which you’ll be reading about very soon)! Camp H.A.M.M.E.R. is falling...and The Heroic Age is dawning!

With all the recent events, it's no surprise that they would want to just sweep the whole program under the rug.  The Initiative program came as a result of the Superhuman Registration Act.  That's still a sore subject with a lot of the characters.  During Secret Invasion, it was revealed that one of the top staff, Hank Pym, was secretly a Skrull and each team in the Fifty State Initiative was supposed to have a Skrull sleeper agent in its roster.   With Norman Osborn's rise to power, the Initiative soon become another tool for his personal use.  The program may have had good intentions but all the events just leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Last year at the Big Apple Comic Con, we heard that Christos Gage and Mike McKone would be taking over Avengers Academy.  We are left wondering what the direction of the Academy will take.  Is this simply going to be a continuation of the Initiative program or will it be closer to the Xavier Institute?  Who will be in control and oversee the Academy?  Are we going to see heroes like Iron Man and Captain America take time off from fighting supervillains to give kids lessons on becoming an Avenger?  Will Jarvis become the school custodian?  Is Taskmaster going to be out of a job?  Is this where we'll find out about Tigra's baby?

As long as Tigra and Diamondback are there I'm OK. Still sad it's ending. It became my favorite Avengers title.

An Avengers Academy sounds sort of X-Men-y. Also it kind of reminds of that What If? Civil War issue. The one where Cap and Iron Man talk it out and Captain America starts training the heroes without them having to reveal their identities to anybody but the Avengers.

@danhimself: I was totally wondering that myself.  I spent some time digging the recent issues of Initiative here in the office trying to figure it out.  Last I recall, after Ragnarok attacked, she decided she wanted to keep it.  Then recently there was all that Avengers Resistance stuff.  She's looking pretty good for being pregnant.  Guess she's not that far along but how long has Dark Reign been going on and how long since she was with Hank/Skrull?

I guess with Marvel time, about a decade equates to a year... so we've got another few years of Tigra's pregnancy left to go ;)

I'm curious where the "Avengers Academy" will be located.  Will it be at Camp Hammond?  Are they going to rebuild the Avengers Mansion?  What's the school motto going to be?  What will their mascot be?

I don't mind if the Avengers Academy sounds kinda X-Men-y because the X-Men haven't been a school for a little while now. Maybe they could get some of the X-Men who were more comfortable as teachers than as saviors of the mutant race....like Beast. He should be involved in Avengers Academy.

@Emperor Gonzo Noir: Do you really think only one title?  I'm thinking regular Avengers, West Coast, Great Lakes (or something) then there's the Academy.  They won't cancel four successful books and replace it with one.

It's funny, about 17 years ago, I was really into the TSR Marvel RPG, and I had created ongoing adventures with some friends entitled 'Avengers Academy' and Beast was an instructor, along with Hank Pym, Iron Fist and others.  Students were the original New Warriors, Darkhawk, X-Terminators, Cloak & Dagger, Power Pack, and other younger characters.

@G-Man: West Coast I can see but I hope they don't do Great Lakes Avengers. Maybe Avengers Europe or something. As for where the Avengers Academy will be I think its gotta be in or around New York. Maybe repurpose Avengers Tower as the Academy while the Avengers themselves meet in a rebuilt Avengers Mansion. Or the Academy could be on a rebuilt Avengers Island that way the X-Men and the Avengers would each have their own islands right off of major cities.

@geraldthesloth: And Black Knight. These two are old friends and should be in a team book that people might actually buy long enough to make it to issue 50. Though if its only set in Europe people might not read it. They'll just have to keep moving settling things world wide.

@AngelFrost:  This is from Marvel's web site
    Paraphernalia
Tigra wears an amulet that enables her to transform into her human form, and back into her Tigra form just by touching it.

So yes she can change back in forth  at will as long as she is touching the amulet

For all the bull marvel has about creating comic books. Their artists really can barely draw. Stop creating characters in spandex only. That guy rob whatever that was hired by marvel can't draw in story mode. He's only a pose drawer like anyone you can find online. But they always complain about making comics the marvel way, i think john Buscema was the only one that could draw the Marvel way.

At first she couldn't, only had an illusion that made her look like human, but she still was furry. Back in Avengers Spotlight #38 she regained the amulet that lets her shift between human and her furry form.

    no she can not "
At first she couldn't, only had an illusion that made her look like human, but she still was furry. Back in Avengers Spotlight #38 she regained the amulet that lets her shift between human and her furry form. "
    Ohh, Okay
So she can transform human now? x

Wow, I guess I missed her being able to change back and forth as well.  I know she could before but haven't seen her do it lately.

    @Beast-X:
lol. sorry bunk article. that was not confirmed as the new team of Avengers. thats a promo for
the various books involved in Herioc Age. the fact that the characters are taken from different images
and superimposed on one picture should be apparent by the white cropping outlines. amazing, its
been one day since Marvels Herioc Age press release and already internet sites are making up random
stuff to get  more hits on their sites...actually, no its not a surprise at all.

their own rumors in between. just letting you know.

    http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.10914.marvel~colon~_the_heroic_age

Marvel Comics is proud to announce The Heroic Age, the dawn of an exciting new era of heroism in the Marvel Universe! Beginning in May 2010 with the release of AVENGERS #1, The Heroic Age ushers in a brighter Marvel Universe and a bold new era for the world's greatest super heroes as they emerge from darkness with a renewed sense of hope and optimism, leading to the formation of all new teams with new members...and brand new characters! Titles branded with the Heroic Age banner offer a perfect jumping on point for readers new and old alike, as the top comic book creators in the world deliver a Marvel Universe like you've never seen before!

Over the past few years, the Marvel Universe and its citizens have found themselves living in a dark age of despair. Beginning with the disbanding of the Avengers, the heroes of the Marvel Universe have been caught in a demoralizing downward spiral that has included the genocide of the mutant population, a divisive civil war between heroes, the assassination of Captain America, a worldwide subversive alien infiltration and invasion, and the media-fueled and publicly-supported ascension of the Green Goblin's civilian identity, Norman Osborn, to power and control of the United States. Now, the heroes have united once again, stronger than ever and are prepared to face the dangers that lie ahead.

"Our heroes have experienced some of their greatest trials and tribulations recently, but now there's going to be a renewed hope among their ranks," said Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer & Editor-in-Chief Marvel Entertainment LLC. "As our heroes emerge from the darkness, the Marvel Universe is going to be a more optimistic place than we've seen in a quite awhile. But that doesn't mean we're making things easy for our characters!"

From the tone of the storylines, to the stunning new artistic look, The Heroic Age ushers in a dramatic new vision of the Marvel Universe. Marvel's most elite characters will be at the center of The Heroic Age, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and more!

David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales & Circulation, Marvel Entertainment LLC. added "We've been working out the details of THE HEROIC AGE for about a year now. The plan is to give old and new fans alike the perfect place to jump into the Marvel Universe without feeling like they've missed out on anything that's come before. If there's a Heroic Age banner on one of the books, we're serious when we say 'the Marvel Universe Starts Here!"

A new Age of Heroes dawns this May as THE HEROIC AGE begins and changes the face of comics as you know them! Join Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman, John Romita Jr, and more of the industry's hottest creators as they bring a bold new era for the world's greatest super heroes, with a stunning new look for the Marvel Universe!

UPDATE 0945: We reached out to Marvel, asking if the image was merely a teaser for the entire initiative or a new Avengers line-up picture, and received simply "we can't comment." As pointed out in our comments section, as well, this Captain America in the updated costume does appear to have blue eyes, as Steve Rogers does, and isn't carrying Bucky's signature gun. Take that as you will.

ORIGINAL STORY: First mentioned back in October during the Retailer Summit in Baltimore, MD, Marvel's "Heroic Age" got a full length announcement today, with a launch date, as expected, of May 2010.

After the April 2010 Solicitations showed Marvel's cancellation of all of the current Avengers titles, the "Heroic Age" will begin with Avengers #1, still written by Brian Bendis, and according to USA Today, led by Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man. The promotional image adds an interesting wrinkle, however, with the apparent inclusion of Bucky Barnes, the sidekick-cum-Captain America, rather than the recently returned original Cap, Steve Rogers. The image also features Clint Barton in his old Hawkeye costume.

The press release mentions the initiative will see other new teams launch, new members joining existing teams, and all-new characters involved in the tonal shift for the line. This follows aproximately seven years of increasingly dark stories at the publisher, culminating in the last year of major super-villain Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) essentially controlling the vast majority of super-powered characters in the Marvel Universe. The press release echoes the teaser image, noting:

"From the tone of the storylines, to the stunning new artistic look, The Heroic Age ushers in a dramatic new vision of the Marvel Universe. Marvel’s most elite characters will be at the center of The Heroic Age, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and more!"

DC Entertainment recently announced a similar venture for the DCU to begin in April 2010 entitled "Brightest Day." The parallel tonal shifts come on the wave of a successful United States presidential campaign that preached a message of hope.

pointing out to you in the Omelete Brazilian news story

Avengers # 1 does not have release date confirmed. The image has released drawings of Jim Cheung (including the new armor as Iron Man) but it is unclear whether he will be the artist's HQ.

it is being released May 2010, exact date as of next months solicitations as always (which is in about a week)

The team, the news is certainly a departure from Wolverine and the entry of The Thing (out of the Fantastic Four?) And Gorilla-Man (Team Agents of Atlas) and the return of members of traditional training, as Beast, Hawkeye and Black Widow. (picture displayed)

again, sorry but this is made-up its no news that alot of times sites make up of perpetuate rumors as truth because it increases
controversy and therefore hits on their site. my words do not intend to somehow ridicule you, nor claim myself to be the master of anything.
they are directed at that article and site, and my reasoning comes from the actual source. so i wont stand by your accusations. sorry.
