During World War II, Steve Rogers volunteered to receive the experimental Super-Soldier Serum. Enhanced to the pinnacle of human physical potential and armed with an unbreakable shield, he became Captain America. After a failed mission left him encased in ice for decades, he was found and revived by the Avengers, later joining their ranks and eventually becoming the team's leader.
The Hangman learned that Redditch was the bestial madman known as DePrayve and kidnapped him during his recovery at a hospital. Hangman wanted to punish Redditch for his evil actions but the psychologist transformed into DePrayve when Hangman was fighting with the Werewolf by Night. DePrayve punched out the Hangman and he was apprehended by the police.
Matthew O'Brien is responsible for the death of the original Hangman.
