PNN’s inaugural Wednesday Warrior Review is dedicated to Felicia Day and all the fine folks over at The Guild. The Guild is being published by Dark Horse and with this issue has wrapped up a series of one shots each dedicated to one of the main characters as a prequel book informing their backstory prior to the first season of the web series of the same name (for more info on the series, check out Congrats Guildies).

Todays issue follows Fawkes, the leader of rival guild the Axis of Anarchy, on a bridging adventure between season 4 following his journey to his surprising state when he returns in season 5. This issue reveals how Fawkes deals with his split from Codex (Felicia Day) and navigates the aggressive personalities of the Axis both in game and out. As usual for The Guild books, there’s a variant cover (which I always wind up buying as the var usually features in game personas and comes off way more epic, although both covers for this one were in game likenesses), and a 4 page sample can be found on Dark Horse’s website.

Written by Felicia Day and Will Wheaton (who stars as Fawkes on the series), this book was a pleasure to read! If you’re like me then after the new 52 and big event books like Fear Itself or Spider Island you’re probably burnt out on serials and super heros. If the thought of combing thru a dozen Batman titles each over the course of 2 months to get one solid story in “The Night of the Owls” makes you a little queasy, then maybe it’s time to switch publishers and read something else. Not only do Dark Horse books usually focus on character over tie ins, pointless action, and over-sexualizing their properties; but one shots force a story to be told in one issue letting you literally pick up one book to read one story. No having to sift thru years worth of back issues and continuity to get to the point where you can start this one book. No waiting for months to get to an ending (and who even knows if it will be a good ending, half the time the book isn’t even finalized when it starts!); novel concept huh? Fawkes does a great job of balancing cool video game-esque action while revealing some interesting character details of someone you always wanted to see more of in the series. Granted there you get Will Wheaton more or less playing himself, but Fawkes really does a good job of fleshing out a character who, while not one dimensional, was kind of a lot of the same (at least in season 3 & 4).

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who likes The Guild, is tired of superhero books/the big 2, values story and substance over action, or is just looking for something new. You can pick up the whole series at your local comic book shop, either as individual issues, or there is a tpb collecting the original 3 episode arc of The Guild comic + a sketchbook/pinup section. Another trade collecting all the character one shots (except for Fawkes) is due out the first week in July and is now available for pre-order from Dark Horse.

    Final Score: 4/5 Nips
