The Golden Army was built during a great war between mankind and the magic people that shared the earth. As the war grew desperate, the one-armed King Balor ordered the goblins to construct an indestructible army of robotic soldiers. The army was controlled by a three piece crown which was worn by the king. When the king unleashed The Golden Army, the armies of man were slaughtered by the hundreds with The Golden Army taking no prisoners and showing no mercy. The destruction was so great that King Balor offered a truce where mankind kept the cities and the forests belonged to "the children of the earth." Balor had the army locked away and the crown split to prevent the golden army from ever waking again, fearing it's awesome devastation.

The Golden Army sat dormant for millennia as mankind grew to forget the treaty promising peace between them and the children of the earth. When mankind forced its way into the realm of the magical creatures, Prince Nuada collected the pieces of the crown and seized control of the army. Hellboy and his companions battled the army, hoping to stop them from ever reaching mankind. Johann Kraus was able to take control of a soldier, making it glow blue and using it to fight the other soldiers; while Hellboy used the disembodied arm of a soldier after The Good Samaritan was empty. However, the magical robotic soldiers repaired themselves easily, outnumbering and surrounding Hellboy's group. The army stopped attacking when Hellboy challenged Nuada for the right to command the soldiers, forming a ring to let them compete. Upon Hellboy's victory, the army was permanently disabled when the crown was destroyed.

The Golden Army is composed of "seventy times seventy soldiers" or 4900. They are over ten feet tall and glow red while active. They each have a large blade housed in their right forearm which serves as their primary weapon. They are virtually indestructible, capable of rebuilding themselves using pieces from each other. Despite their self-repair ability, they can be disabled temporarily with powerful physical attacks. They follow the will of the bearer of the command crown, who must be of noble blood and be unchallenged for their right to command.
